  • YMCA recalls changed lives

    By Peggy Kilgore

As a holiday gift to our Oldham Era readers, we would like to offer some inspiration and motivation. We are always hearing great stories of achievement and determination from our Y members, many of whom have had life-changing experiences by getting on the path to better health.

Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Letters to the Editor from Students - Dec. 24

Students in Georgia Drury’s fourth grade class at Locust Grove Elementary were provided with the following prompt with which to complete a writing assignment:

  • Letters to the Editor - Dec. 24, 2015

     Keep Oldham County Dry

How dry I am, How dry I am

And that’s how I wanna stay,

But how wet we’ll be if on December 29th

    You don’t stand with me.

  • The sweetest victory celebration of all

When my children were all teenagers and young adults, Christmas had lost its magic.

No grandchildren were blessing my life yet, and I was going through the motions of being excited about Christmas.

Truth be told, I couldn’t wait for Christmas to be over so things would slow down and I could relax.  I knew that as a minister this was an inappropriate response to Christmas, but I wasn’t going to just start making up feelings either.

  • Three sobering realities

Sometimes when my ego or the ego of others becomes too prominent I find that I have to remind myself of three sobering realities.  It’s all about humility.  The moment you think you have acquired humility is just the moment you have lost it.

The first reality is that everything I am, I have received from others.

  • Historic vote for county

    By Scott Whitehouse

Oldham County voters have the opportunity on Dec. 29 to cast a historic vote in a special election.  Please vote “yes” to allow the sale of packaged alcoholic beverages in Oldham County.

On Dec. 5, 1933 Prohibition ended in the United States. Eighty-two years later we have the chance to make the sale of packaged alcoholic beverages available to consumers in Oldham County.

  • A December birthday celebration

    By Ginger Lumpkin

I’ve got a birthday coming up!  On Dec. 20, I will turn 46 years old.

Most people born at this time of year are like, “Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is for somebody to remember my December birthday.”
