The South Oldham Middle School parent-teacher organization hosted the first-ever spelling bee at the school after school hours on Jan. 12.

Participants included sixth-grade student Saraiya Davis, seventh-grade students Magdalene McCollum and Norah Rembold, and eighth-grade student Andrew “Tommy” Brame.

After 13 rounds, the spelling bee concluded with Brame winning and McCollum finishing as runner-up. The winning word for Brame was captain.

Both Brame and McCollum received free subscriptions for Encyclopedia Britannica online, courtesy of Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Brame advances to the regional spelling bee, hosted by the Louisville Free Public Library on Saturday.

As part of his preparation for the regional spelling Bee, Brame received a 4,500-word study list.
