South Oldham volleyball seeks its first appearance in the Eighth Region tournament for the first time since 2012 with a roster filled with versatility. With multiple players that can play multiple positions, coach Amy Wells said she is trying to figure out what positions and line up work best for the Lady Dragons.

Bella Williams, a sophomore, started as an outside hitter last season and earned All-District honors. In the Lady Dragons’ opening matches of this year, Williams has played the middle on defense. Wells said depending on serve receive, Williams could move back to outside hitter.

“A lot of our serves are going to the outside right now, so she [Williams] isn’t getting as many touches as I want right now,” Wells said.

Kara Bradley started as an outside hitter as a junior, but has played well defensively on serve receive, so she could occupy the libero spot at times this fall.

Mia Evers and Morgan Medley started as middle blockers as freshmen last season. The two return to the net as sophomores.

With the goal of balancing the offense, Danielle Cloutier and Macy Metcalf will both set for the Lady Dragons. Cloutier is the first senior setter Wells has had in several years.

“There is that senior confidence in her right now, you can see it on the court,” Wells said. “She is relaxed and in control.”

Cloutier wants the offense to run at a fast pace this season.

“We need to push at a faster pace because we tried slowing it down against teams, but we’re better when our passes and sets are quick,” Cloutier said.

Williams, Evers, Medley and Metcalf, along with Samantha Kasser, make up a sophomore class that pairs well with the three-member senior class.

“The seniors are definitely leaders, but there is a lot of fire and competitive edge in the group of sophomores,” Wells said. “It’s a cool dynamic.”

“We’re a younger team, but we’re all talented,” senior Maddie Montross said.

Montross can play outside hitter and opposite side hitter. Junior Zoie Cullison can play around the net or on the outside.
