Lady Colonels fall to CAL 3-1 on penalty kicks

By Jason Stamm

BUCKNER--- Penalty kicks were the only thing standing in the way of the Lady Colonels and a region girls’ soccer championship.

Oldham County scored the game’s first goal, just into the second half, but Christian Academy of Louisville evened the score to send the game into extra time, where it would ultimately defeat the Lady Colonels 3-1 in penalty kicks.

“Our kids played great all year long and it’s a terrible way to lose,” Oldham County coach Dan Schulz said. “But I’m very proud of all of them for what they have achieved.”

Christian Academy of Louisville was the first to put its penalty in the back of the net. Next, Oldham County sophomore forward Haley Kemper stepped up to the plate to try and even the score. Kemper, who scored a goal three minutes into the second half, hit the right cross bar but missed the goal.

“Missing my PK feels like you are letting down the seniors and penalty kicks don’t determine who the better team is when it’s over either,” Kemper said.

The Lady Centurions missed their next kick and Oldham County sophomore Karigan Owens knocked hers into the right corner to even the score 1-1. From then on the Lady Colonels were unable to make one of their next two shots while CAL made both of its shots.

As Oldham County’s final penalty kick fell into the arms of CAL’s its season was done.

It took 43 minutes before either team was able to score but the Lady Colonels finally scored with 37 minutes left in the game, on a goal by Kemper. With only 9 minutes left CAL sophomore forward Kenzie Dannelly drove a shot off Oldham County’s Goalie Brittany Moshos’ hands to send the game into extra time.

Neither team capitalized in both five-minute extra times, before the Lady Centurions came away with the win in penalty kicks.

“Our goal throughout the whole season was to win regionals but we tried our hardest and left everything on the field and that’s what matters.” senior mid fielder Whitney Rumsey said.
