Less than a month after the Sauerbeck Family Drive-In opened in La Grange, it is temporarily closed.

According to a preliminary National Weather Service (NWS) storm report, the screen likely collapsed by a thunderstorm wind gust around 6:30 p.m. last night.

There were 40 to 45 mph winds in the area at the time, according to the NWS.

“This sub-severe storm likely sent out a gust from the North that hit the North-facing screen full on, causing the structural collapse,” the NWS wrote in the report.

Owner Stephen Sauerback said that the screen was insured and they are currently investigating what happened.

"We are investigating and figuring out what to do differently and looking into a temporary option," he said.

“I assume we will find a temporary option that will allow us to re-open this year and have a permanent solution back in place before we re-open next year,” Sauerback said.
