Man fled the state with 2-year-old son, violated custody agreement

A 2-year-old child was returned to Oldham County after the child’s father violated a court order and fled to Maryland with the child.

Brett Ward Jr., who lives near La Grange, was supposed to return the child to its mother on Sunday.

After La Grange Police were alerted that the child was not back, Chief Kevin Collett said Ward “stalled for quite some time” about his location.

La Grange Police issued an emergency protective order and verbally served Ward with the EPO over the phone.

He was given the opportunity to return the child, but Ward “chose to ignore these conditions and fled the state,” according to a police department release.

On Monday, Oct. 10, Maryland authorities located Ward and the child at Ward’s parent’s home in Glen Burnie, more than 10 hours from La Grange.

Ward was arrested and taken to jail in Maryland, where he awaits extradition back to Oldham County. Collett said it may be the end of this week or early next week before Ward is back in the county.

“The child is in its mother’s care,” Collett said. “Our priority was to get the child back to its mother.”

The department declined to release additional details about the child.
