Honor service men and women

-A A +A

As Veterans Day approaches, we recognize the sacrifices made by all our veterans, and thank them for their service to our country.
As your representative and a veteran, I make every effort to make sure the men and women who have served our nation in uniform get the respect, treatment, services and benefits that they deserve.
Unemployment remains unacceptably high for all Americans, but the jobless rate among veterans is consistently higher than the nation at large.
That is why I have supported efforts in Congress to improve veterans’ employment, including H.R. 2349, the Veterans Opportunity to Work Act.
This legislation would create a new three year employment retraining assistance program for up to 100,000 unemployed veterans and service members separating from active duty who enroll in either technical schools or community colleges.
The bill would also expand eligibility for VA home loan guarantees to surviving spouses of veterans who died of disabilities that were not service-related.
While the VOW Act is currently pending Senate consideration, there are many other services and programs available for veterans.
My office is happy to assist current service members and veterans communicate with federal agencies on issues ranging from veterans benefits, TRICARE, GI Bill, veterans’ military records and medals, and much more.
To learn more about these programs, please visit my website at http://GeoffDavis.house.gov/Veterans or call my Fort Mitchell District Office at (859) 426-0080.
On the Support Our Troops section of my website, Kentuckians can find ways to give back to veterans and make things a little easier for active duty service members. Organizations such as the United Service Organization, the Thank You Foundation and Operation Homefront provide Americans with the opportunity to lend a hand and brighten the day of a service member, veteran or military family member.

To commemorate Veterans Day, there will be a number of events going on across the Fourth District where you can show your support for those who have served our nation in uniform.
In addition to parades across the district, there will be formal ceremonies at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North in Williamstown and the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup County.
To see a complete list of events in the Commonwealth, please visit http://www.governor.ky.gov/11-11-11/events.
Every veteran is a hero for their willingness to give their life in the service and protection of others.
However you choose to recognize this Veterans Day, please take a moment to thank those who have risked their lives in service to our nation.
