Herbs, hummingbird events at Yew Dell in August

Curious about how to grow, harvest or cook with herbs? Or are you a hummingbird fan? This August, Yew Dell has something for herb, tomato and hummingbird lovers alike.

The Herb-a-mato Fest is Thursday, Aug. 14 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. and will feature a dozen vendors and demonstrations featuring: herb plants, infused vinegars and oil, lavender, heirloom tomatoes and making handmade paper with herbs. This is an intimate opportunity to meet herb and tomato experts and learn a variety of ways you can incorporate them into your cooking, garden and everyday life. The event is free with regular admission: $7 adults, $5 seniors (over 55) and children under 12 are free.

Vendors include: The Kentucky Herb Society, Williams-Sonoma, Old Thyme Herbs, Louisville Tea Company and many more experts on a wide variety of herb and related topics.

Yew Dell’s annual Hummingbird Festival, featured in Discover Magazine, will be held Saturday, Aug. 23 from 3 - 6 p,m. Guests will have an opportunity to meet area experts and the cute little creatures too. Yew Dell’s Hummingbird Festival is a great way to spend a few hours enjoying the gardens and learning about one of Mother Nature’s most amazing marvels. The event is free with regular admission: $7 for adults, $5 for seniors over 55 and children under 12 are free. Activities will include:

• Expert demonstrations from Brainard Palmer-Ball of catching and banding hummingbirds

• Tips and advice on attracting and photographing hummingbirds from renowned hummingbird photographer, Russ Thompson

• Children’s activities: including hummingbird related crafts and scavenger hunts.

• Hummingbird merchandise and plant booth.

• Food and refreshments.
