A fire destroyed a garage and a car at a home in Crestwood this afternoon.

Pewee Valley Fire Department Captain Chris Haunz said when first responders arrived on scene at 9002 Hawley Gibson Road before 4 p.m., the garage behind the home was fully involved. He also said there was some exposure to a building behind the garage.

No persons or animals were inside the home or garage at the time of the fire. Haunz did not believe that flames touched the home.

Next-door neighbor Roger Jones said he heard a 'crackle and pop,' looked outside and saw that the garage was fully engulfed in flames and called 911.

Firefighters from South Oldham Fire Department and the Pewee Valley Fire Department battled the flames on the hottest day of the year, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville.

It was 98 degrees as of 4:30 p.m., and the heat index was 101, according to the NWS.

The Oldham County Fire Marshal’s office and Oldham County EMS were also on scene.

The fire is now under control. The cause of the fire remained under investigation at the time of press.
