An elderly couple was killed in a fatal collision on Interstate 71 southbound earlier today.

Oldham County Police identified the victims as 74-year-old Larry Doyle and 73-year-old Joyce Doyle, both of Crestwood.

Larry Doyle struck the back of a semi that was traveling at a slow speed because of heavy traffic, according to a preliminary investigation. The accident occurred on Interstate 71 southbound on the bridge near exit 14.

Oldham County Police, Oldham County EMS and the South Oldham Fire Department responded to the scene.

Larry Doyle was pronounced dead at the scene while Joyce Doyle was transported to University of Louisville hospital where she later died.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation by the Oldham County Police Department’s Reconstruction Unit.

Both southbound lanes were shut down as first responders cleared the scene.

The Era was initially provided the wrong ages in a previous version of this story, according to relatives.
