By Jason Stamm

Age: 11.

City: Goshen.

School: North Oldham Middle School.

Sports: Soccer. Parents: Cindy and Aaron Smith.

Accomplishments: Not long after Dylan Smith could walk, he was kicking around a soccer ball. By age 3, he was playing competitively. Eight years later, he’s one of the central figures for the Throughbreds’ U12 club team as a defender. And Smith said he’s had fun in the process. “I just like making up new moves and stuff like that,” he said. “Whenever someone gets past me, I always get back and recover.” For now, Smith plays soccer solely for the Throughbreds. But he said he’s also had his eye on trying out for North Oldham’s team as a seventh grader. In the meantime, he’s getting instruction from coach Simon Bird that he said he hopes will help him with whomever he plays for. “Simon, he’s been teaching us different moves, so I know other people can do that,” Smith said. “I have to figure out a way to stop that, so standing back for a minute and then stepping towards it. He’s helped me with controlling the ball.” Conditioning with his club team has also been a big benefit. Smith said he loves to run and is contemplating running cross country next year. He said he didn’t think he was ready yet this year, but hopes he will be.

Other activities: Smith is a member of the youth group at Westport Baptist Church, participating in various volunteer work.
