  • South Oldham outlasts North in...

    It took four quarters and then some to decide the championship game of the Henry County Invitational Tournament, but once the dust settled on Dec. 29, South Oldham was the last team standing after a gutsy 80-75 overtime win over rival North Oldham.
    Out of the gate, it looked like North might have a puncher’s chance, getting 14 crucial first quarter points from guard David Levitch to take a 19-14 advantage through the first eight minutes.
    But from there, South settled down, opening up a 21-12 run to retake the lead at halftime at 35-31.

  • South Oldham wins OC January...

    While the South Oldham boys’ and girls’ basketball teams picked up wins on the hardwood over the weekend, swimmers claimed first-place finishes in the Oldham County January Invitational.
    Jared Ashcraft was the top individual boys’ finisher for the Sea Dragons, grabbing first place in both the boys’ 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Savannah Walker was the top female swimmer for South, finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle and second in the 100-yard breaststroke.

  • Oldham County Shootout brings...

    Nearly 70 teams descended on Buckner Jan. 5 for the Oldham County Shootout, an annual basketball tournament for elementary and middle school teams ranging from third to eighth grade.
    The two-day event provided plenty of interesting matchups as county teams squared off on the hardwood for a shot at the title.

  • Oldham County finishes fifth at...

    Traveling to Woodford County for the last weekend of 2012, all three local wrestling teams competed in the Woodford County Invitational.
    Of those, Oldham County was the highest finisher, grabbing fifth place with a score of 161. North Oldham and South Oldham finished back-to-back at 16th and 17th with scores of 76 and 65, respectively.

  • South Oldham rallies from 8-...

    For the first 16 minutes of Friday night’s heavyweight showdown between rivals Oldham County and South Oldham, defense was at a premium. Though both squad’s entered the game averaging more than 65 points a contest, neither found their rhythm early on, grinding out to a 22-14 Oldham County lead at halftime.
    That all changed after the break as the Dragons roared to life early in the third quarter and never let up, outscoring the Colonels 35-22 down the stretch to claim a gutsy 49-44 win and improve to 2-0 in 29th district play.

  • South Oldham delivers knockout...

    The South Oldham Lady Dragons may have started the season 2-11 but that didn’t matter Jan. 4 as they traveled to Buckner for a district showdown with rival Oldham County.
    After falling behind 3-0 in the game’s opening minutes, the Lady Dragons went on the offensive the rest of the way, going toe-to-toe with the Lady Colonels over the next two quarters.
    That would lead to a slim 17-20 halftime advantage and all the momentum South Oldham needed as they pushed ahead from there, outscoring Oldham County 20-13 in the fourth quarter to win 54-43.

  • North Oldham wins Oldham County...

    For the third year in a row, the North Oldham swim team walked away from the Oldham Championships Dec. 22, claiming eight girls’ events and four boys’ events.
    But unlike in years’ past, this meet came down to the wire.
    “This year was the closest meet ever between first and second,” North Oldham swim coach Kris Krohn said, “It was a very exciting meet with great results.”
    Despite not winning the boys’ or girls’ portions of the event, the Mustangs were able to pull out a win with two second place finishes.

  • Oldham County girls roll 75-41

    Oldham County’s Lady Colonels defeated Atherton Dec. 28, moving to 6-5 on the season. The win moved them into the finals of Oldham County’s Holiday Invitational, where they faced Fairdale High School in a game that was played after press time.
    Oldham County came out of the gates firing, taking control of the game with their defense and fast break offense to open up 14-2 run to start the first quarter.
    Atherton attempted to slow down the Lady Colonels with a time out but Oldham County finished the quarter leading 16-6.
