  • Class 3A Girls Track and Field...

    LEXINGTON – Oldham County’s girls landed in the points throughout the afternoon Saturday at the state track and field championships.

    OC had fourth place finishes in the 4x400 relay, pole vault and triple jump, as well as a fifth place finish in the 300 hurdles.

    Overall the Lady Colonels finished 10th with 20 points. Bryan Station (70 points) won the team title, followed by North Hardin (64) and Central (55). South Oldham didn’t register any points.

    LEXINGTON – The Dowdy’s showed Saturday why two of the state’s premier long-distance runners come from the same family.

    Sophomore South Oldham twins Cole and Tanner Dowdy finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 3,200 run at the Class 3A state track and field championships at the University of Kentucky.

    The Dowdy’s earned all 10 points for South, which finished tied with Oldham County for 19th place.

    North Hardin (77 points) took the boys’ team title, followed by Trinity (67.5) and St. Xavier (65).

    WARSAW – Anderson County’s Bailey Curry and Kaci Currens each hit home runs off North Oldham pitcher Sam Maiocco Monday as the Lady Bearcats ended the Lady Mustangs’ season with a 7-2 win in the Region 8 tournament at Gallatin County.

    North finished its first season under coach Erick Anderson 15-17.

    North took a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore right fielder Hannah Phillips singled and then scored on an Anderson County error.

  • Region 8 baseball: Wiley one-...

    NEW CASTLE – Zach Wiley was hitting spots with his fastball, keeping hitters off-balance with a hard slider and letting a superb defense make plays behind him.

    Wiley pitched a one-hit shutout Monday night for his Collins Titans, who beat North Oldham 4-0 in the final first round game of the Region 8 tournament at Henry County.

    North’s lone hit was a fifth-inning Cameron Masterman single that broke up Wiley’s perfect game. The Bellarmine University signee had already thrown a no-hitter this spring against rival Shelby County.

    WARSAW – Oldham County was only able to piece together one rally Tuesday against Gallatin County pitcher Danielle Nichelson. It proved to be the difference in the Lady Colonels continuing their season.

    OC took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the fifth and held on to win by that score in the semifinals of the Region 8 tournament at Gallatin. The Lady Colonels (23-11-1) advanced to the title game, where they'll take on Anderson County at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

    WARSAW – A big first inning paved the way for an Oldham County first round win Monday.

    The Lady Colonels broke out of the gate with four runs and held on to beat Collins 7-4 in the first game of the Region 8 tournament at Gallatin County.

    OC will meet the winner of Monday's Gallatin County vs. Grant County game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

    “The main thing was hitting,” OC coach Steve Leanhart said. “That's our team.
