    While many athletes have struggled to stay hydrated during this summer’s brutal heat wave, the Oldham County High School cross country runners are taking a different approach, taking to the water rather than just taking it in. Nearly 50 Colonel runners converge on the John W. Black Aquatic Center once a week for a series of drills designed not only to keep them cool, but work them out.

    Wth the magnitude of the Summer Olympic games reverberating across the globe, Oldham County High School wrestler Mikey Caudill did some competing of his own this summer, albeit far from London.

    There were three steps involved in the process.

    Step one: Raise $5,000 to go to Australia for a national wrestling competition.

    Check.

    Step two: Get a gold medal while you’re there.

    Record-setting temperatures in Oldham County this summer have forced several local sports teams to revise their plans for practice. Though many coaches are moving practice to early morning or night, others are taking additional preventative measures.

    Though kicking off nearly 4,032 miles away in London, Oldham County youngsters got a taste of the Summer Olympics as local after-school programs gathered at Oldham County High School to go for the gold... or ribbons.

    The local event, which began in 2000, takes place in summer Olympic years as a way to stay in touch.

    Both the North Oldham Junior League and South Oldham Senior League teams captured their respective state titles on July 25 at Oldham County High School.

     With North Oldham Little League wrapping up a Junior League state championship in the early game on July 25, South Oldham made sure to capture the Senior League state title in the night cap, outlasting Ashland National 9-6 in extra innings.
