  • Former Oldham County basketball...

    To say that Dec. 8 was a special night for Oldham County High School athletics might be a bit of an understatement.
    Though both the boys and girls teams picked up big wins in their respective games of the Ronald McDonald Classic — a fundraising game the Colonels have hosted for a decade — they also honored former basketball coach Gary Forrest with a banner recognizing his contributions to the program.
    In fitting manner, it transpired during the event that Forrest founded and participated in for a number of years.

  • Just a bit short

    If the Oldham County basketball team was supposed to feel intimidated Tuesday night, someone forgot to tell the Colonels.
    Welcoming Bullitt East to Buckner, the boys in blue gave the Chargers all they could handle, going toe-to-toe with the state’s No. 4-ranked team for the better part of the game before falling 50-43.
    No player was bigger in that effort that senior forward Garrett Masters, who led the Colonels with 10 points.

  • Several local football players...

    The football season ended in November but several area players have the chance to play at least one more game.
    Six players were named to the Greater Louisville Football Coaches Association Shively Sporting Goods East-West All-Star game which was played Dec.. 2 at Fairdale High School.
    North Oldham defensive end Cody Elbert, running back Josh Smith and offensive lineman Tanner Williams were named to the East team along with South Oldham’s Tony Brackens and Tom Singer and Oldham County’s Jacob Taylor.

  • Oldham County finishes in second...

    Their competition didn’t end quite the way they hoped, the Oldham County wrestling team performed well nonetheless, grabbing a second place showing in a tough field at the Oldham Superduals.
    After defeating Jeffersonville, Ind., 67-9, the Colonels dispatched Apollo 63-13, LaRue County 39-36 and perennial power Woodford County in the semifinals 36-27.
    That earned them the right to take on Simon Kenton in the finals but the boys in blue ran out of steam, dropping 57-12 to the Pioneers.

  • Local runners compete at weekend...

    Runners from Centerfield Elementary, Harmony Elementary, South Oldham Middle, East Oldham Middle, Oldham County Middle and North Oldham Middle competed in the Eighth Annual Coaches Cross Country National Youth Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. on Dec. 1.
    The local athletes joined with other runners as members of the Kentucky Stampede running club team that took over 40 athletes to the meet. The 13- and 14-year-old girls team brought home the third place trophy. Running in that meet representing Stampede from Oldham County include Haley Webb, Clara Lynch and Riley Glenn.

  • Local teams compete at Louisville

    All six local swim teams took to the water Nov. 30 to compete in one last swim meet before the month of December, traveling to the University of Louisville for a showdown with Christian Academy.
    Each team was without a few key swimmers and their absences were certainly felt as CAL finished in first in both boys’ and girls’ competition.
    South Oldham and Oldham County finished in second place for the boys and girls, respectively, without top swimmers Jared Ashcraft and Emma Skinner.

  • Baseball player signs to play...

    On Nov. 26, North Oldham shortstop Connor Heady signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Kentucky.
    Unlike most of his fellow signees, this appears to be just the beginning of the decision-making process for the All-State shortstop.
    While a roster slot waits for him in Lexington, Heady expects to have another big decision to make come summer — whether to play professional baseball.
    Heady believes a selection in the top five rounds of the Major League Baseball amateur draft isn’t out of the question.

  • Oldham County boys open season 2...

    Oldham County High School’s boys basketball team carried over their early season success to the international courts on Monday night, defeating the Australian Travel Team Jets 55-22.
    Oldham County started off the game quickly, going on a 6-0 run in the first two minutes. The Jets caught up quickly when they went on a run of their own to tie the 6-6 with four minutes left in the first quarter.
    The Colonels wento on another long streak, ending the quarter with 20-6 lead.

  • OC girls fall to Australian team

    The Oldham County girls’ basketball team hoped to rebound Monday after a close loss on Friday to Bullitt Central. The Lady Colonels faced the Australian Travel Team but lost 54-46 Monday.
    Oldham County and the Aussies could not seem to separate themselves through at the first quarter, as they matched each other point for point. The Lady Colonels would have the slight edge on The Jets, 14-13. Ashley McMurtrey led the game at the break with 7 points.
