  • Volleyball: Lady Colonels sweep...

BUCKNER – Oldham County volleyball has continued its perfect start to the 2014 season.

Ballard was the latest to fall victim to the Lady Colonel attack, as OC beat the Bruins 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) in straight sets at hime Thursday night.

The Lady Colonels (5-0) have dropped just two sets all season and are ranked No. 9 by the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association. The first week of play has been a good start for an OC team out to defend its first Region 8 title since 2009.

  • Boys soccer: New Dragon stands...

SHELBYVILLE – South Oldham was already projected to contend for a region title and more this year, picked No. 7 in the preseason coaches’ poll.

Now the Dragons have added another goal-scorer to their roster and he’s wasted little time asserting himself on the field.

Jonas Prenn, an Italian foreign exchange student who joined South’s team earlier this month, scored two goals Wednesday in his fourth game as the visiting Dragons shut out Shelby County 6-0.

South Oldham also had its opener canceled due to inclement weather. The Dragons were supposed to play at West Jessamine late last Friday in the second game of the Visitnich.com Bowl.

Now South will play defending 4A state champion Collins Friday in Shelbyville having played just a three-quarter scrimmage against Shelby County Aug. 15.

Collins lost 33-14 at Simon Kenton in its opener last week.

  • Volleyball: Road to Region 8...

Oldham County schools have dominated Region 8 volleyball since regions were redrawn in 2003.

North Oldham, Oldham County or South Oldham has won the region every year since that time, with OC taking the crown last season.

With OC and North both in the preseason top 15 and South getting better, South coach Amy Grimm expects that District 29 dominance to continue in 2014.

“Of course the three best teams in our region are in Oldham County,” Grimm said. “It’s North, South and OC every year.
