  • OC SOFTBALL EARNS NO. 1 SEED

The No. 8 Oldham County Lady Colonels ran their district winning streak to 22 games May 1, knocking off upset-minded South Oldham in a 2-1 nail-biter.
“They played better than us,” Oldham County coach Steve Leanhart said. “We didn’t come prepared, we didn’t come ready to play. We had 15 out of 18 outs as pop-ups.”
South Oldham certainly had its chances, looking poised to cut into an early 2-0 OC lead with one out in the fifth inning.
Nothing came of it though as the Lady Dragons squandered a first-and-third situation with a pick-off and a strikeout.

  • Destiny in Orb-it!

    By Chuck Harper

The result of the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby was satisfying in a lot of ways.
For the owners of Orb and trainer Shug McGaughey, they finally got that equine monkey off their backs.
All you needed to know, you saw on Shug’s face as the NBC cameras showed his expression right after Orb crossed the finish line first. Shug had that same “cat-that-ate-the-canary” look all week.

  • Several local tennis players...

After day one of the Eighth Region tennis tournament, several local athletes are still active.

  • Mustangs' baseball clinches...

It’s only happened once before, but the North Oldham Mustangs can call themselves regular-season district champions once again, securing the No. 1 seed outright with a 4-3 win over Oldham County April 25.
The moment, a special one for both players and coaches, was a long time coming, North Oldham coach Erik Phelps said.
“We’re finally the district champions in the regular season,” he said, “and that’s something that just goes to credit to what they’ve done and the type of kids that they are.”

  • Dragons' lacrosse clinches...

The South Oldham Dragons defeated the North Oldham Mustangs 7-5 at Dragon Stadium April 24 to win the regular-season district championship.
South Oldham got off to a quick start winning the opening face-off. A quick feed to Cason Combs from Kevin Leskody gave South Oldham a one-goal lead 10 seconds into the game.
North Oldham’s Nic Thome countered at the 10:17 mark to tie the score and Ben Lau scored off a feed from Austin Zehnder to give North Oldham a 2-1 lead at the end of one quarter.

  • EOMS wrestlers score big at...

East Oldham Middle School wrestlers Jacob McClintic and Nate Wheeler traveled to Independence, Mo., April 13 and 14 to compete in the Brute National Wrestling Tournament. There were 33 states represented at this tournament.
The first round of wrestling began on Friday and McClintic started off strong with a win by pin in the first round over a wrestler from Illinois.
From there, he won his next two matches to advance to the finals, not allowing a point to be scored on him.

  • Destiny is key for Ky. Derby

    By Chuck Harper

Webster’s Dictionary defines destiny as “the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future; fate.”
The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby will have no short supply of destiny.
Didn’t it just seem to you that the Louisville Cardinals were on a mission to cut down the nets in Atlanta? When Kevin Ware (No. 5, remember that number) went down with that devastating leg injury, it just gave them more resolve to win the whole thing.
    Destiny? Probably.
Kentucky Derby 139 and the 2013 NCAA Tournament have some interesting things in common.

  • North, OC claim titles at Oldham...

Taking to Goshen for the Oldham County Championships, both the North Oldham and Oldham County track and field teams captured big wins April 18, laying claim as the county’s best.
The Oldham County boys finished with a total score of 71, while North Oldham claimed second with a score of 69 and South finished third with 45 points. The North girls grabbed their first-ever championship with 84 points, while OC finished second with 81 and South grabbed third with 21 points.

  • North Oldham improves to 4-1 in...

Needing a win to stay alive in the district race, the North Oldham took a huge step closer to securing the 29th District’s No. 1 seed Tuesday night, dispatching Oldham County 7-1 to move to 4-1 in district play.
The Mustangs didn’t waste any time getting started, plating one run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from catcher Peter Sohn.
They added two more in the bottom of the second following an error and a bases-loaded walk.
