  • Girls cross-country: OC second...

    GOSHEN – Oldham County used a consistent approach to get a runner-up finish Saturday.

    The Lady Colonels placed five runners between positions 18-33 and came in second only to DuPont Manual in the team competition of the Rumble Through the Jungle on Saturday morning at Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve.

    Junior Sammy Griffin led OC with an 18th place finish, running the three laps in 20:36.53.

    “I’m always so proud of the team,” Griffin said. “…I think everybody did well.”

    In the Pewee Division the Carroll County Yellowjackets continued their winning ways by defeating the Packers.

    Alonzo Lopez put the Jackets on the board first by running for a 40-yard touchdown and the ensuing PAT.

    Then Ethan Price ran for 35 yards and the touchdown with Lopez converting his second PAT on the day to make it 14-0.

    The Packers’ Ryan Holvey scored on a 35-yard quarterback sneak, but it wasn’t enough and the final score was 14-6.

    BUCKNER – Something good happened for South Oldham seemingly every time Starr Thompson touched the ball Friday night.

    The junior wingback ran for, threw for and caught a touchdown. He added an interception while playing cornerback.

    Thompson set the tone as Class 5A No. 6 South rolled to its fourth straight win over rival Oldham County, 42-7 on the road at Bell Field.

    The four-game winning streak marks the Dragons’ (3-0) longest run in their series against their Highway 146 rivals.

    The Lady Colonels trailed 18-11 at one point in the first set but came back to win the set 25-23, then took the next two to sweep the Lady Dragons, 3-0.

    OC (19-0) is off to the best start in school history and is now ranked No. 5 in the state.

    Oldham County will hope to make the second intra-county football rivalry game of the year go differently than the first.

    North Oldham stifled the Colonels last month in Goshen on its way to a 42-7 win.

    At 7:30 p.m. Friday OC (0-3) will welcome Class 5A No. 6 South Oldham (2-0) to Bell Field with sights set on a better outcome.

    The Dragons are coming off an emotional home win over Class 5A No. 7 Anderson County, while the Colonels fell 49-7 last week at Class 5A No. 4 Franklin County.
