  • Best in Hoops Classic: Colonels...

BUCKNER – Oldham County had done plenty to impress going into its Best in Hoops Tournament this weekend, starting 7-0 and beating all but one opponent by at least 20 points.

But the Colonels hadn’t shown they could win a close game under heavy pressure from the other team.

OC won its first such game 67-61 against Central Thursday night, then won another tense contest Saturday in the tournament semifinals.

St. Xavier cut a 14-point Colonel lead to 32-30 in the third quarter before OC re-gathered and rallied for a 60-48 home win.

  • Girls Basketball: Lady Dragons...

CRESTWOOD – The home team’s first game at the South Oldham Lady Dragon Hoop Fest on Friday didn’t go how it had hoped.

Central overwhelmed South with a 22-6 first quarter and cruised to a 64-40 win in first round action.

The Lady Dragons (3-3) will play Barren County Saturday afternoon in a second-round loser’s bracket game.

Central (4-1) turned South over a staggering 42 times, meaning the Lady Dragons tallied two more turnovers than points.

  • Boys Basketball: OC gets tested...

BUCKNER – Oldham County was undefeated and unchallenged heading into its game against Central Thursday night.

The Yellowjackets changed that, disrupting the Colonels’ offense, leading at halftime and staying close throughout the second half.

But OC fought through and came out with a hard-fought 67-61 home win in the first round of the Best in Hoops Classic.

Senior guards Hayden Hawes and Connor Hicks had 14 points each for the Colonels (8-0), who will meet St. Xavier at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the tournament semifinals.

  • Boys Basketball: Henry breaks...

GOSHEN – Under normal circumstances, North Oldham coach Rob Burton would’ve had Jon Jon Henry out the game long before the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs were well on their way to their first win, leading District 29 foe Trimble County 70-39 heading into the fourth.

But Henry was in the midst of something special and Burton said he wanted to give him the chance to finish it.

So the coach left his senior guard out on the floor to try to break David Levitch’s school single-game scoring record.

  • Girls Basketball: Lady Mustangs...

GOSHEN – North Oldham went into its game against Atherton 2-2 but yet to play a close game.

So when Lady Rebel forward Jasmine Lewis knocked down two free throws to trim North’s lead to 52-50 with less than two minutes to play Tuesday, Lady Mustangs coach Dan Pfaff wanted to see how his team would respond.

North got the job done, holding on for a 62-56 win behind 24 points from junior guard Cat Fiorito. Fiorito hit all eight free throws she took in the final minute to seal the victory.

  • Girls Basketball: Lady Colonels...

LAWRENCEBURG – Anderson County's post-game locker room chat took longer than usual last Tuesday.

    Much longer.

To be sure, Anderson County was happy with its 49-43 win over regional foe Oldham County.

It was how the Lady Bearcats closed things out – or, more accurately, did not close them out, on the home court at that – that had Anderson coach Clay Birdwhistell in less than a jovial mood.
