  • Swimming: OC, South compete at Girls Night Out
    Oldham County and South Oldham’s girls swimming teams both competed at the Girls Night Out swim meet Friday in Louisville. South (100 points) finished fourth behind Notre Dame (212), Sacred Heart (203) and Cincinnati St. Ursula (178). OC (32) tied for seventh in the 14-team event.   • Girls Basketball: Lady Dragons routed in first round of own tourney
    CRESTWOOD – The home team’s first game at the South Oldham Lady Dragon Hoop Fest on Friday didn’t go how it had hoped. Central overwhelmed South with a 22-6 first quarter and cruised to a 64-40 win in first round action. The Lady Dragons (3-3) will play Barren County Saturday afternoon in a second-round loser’s bracket game. Central (4-1) turned South over a staggering 42 times, meaning the Lady Dragons tallied two more turnovers than points.
  • Boys Basketball: Trimble’s Dunaway does in South
    CRESTWOOD – Minutes after his team beat Trimble County by 35 points Friday, Oldham County coach Coy Zerhusen said the Raiders would “surprise some people in a couple of games this year.” Zerhusen’s prediction came true three nights later. Center Michael Dunaway scored 33 points and Trimble stunned South Oldham 65-53 Monday night on the Dragons’ home court. It was the Raiders’ first win against South since a 59-56 victory on Dec. 15, 2000 – nine games into coach Steve Simpson’s first season in Crestwood.
  • Wrestling: Mustangs take home quad
    GOSHEN – North Oldham defended its home turf Wednesday, going 3-0 in a quad meet against Boyle County, South Oldham and Southern. The Mustangs won decisively over both Boyle (57-22) and Southern (57-17) before edging South 40-35 in what turned out to be the championship dual. “It was good all the way around,” North coach Tony Zeppa said. “All the boys gave a great effort to get that last match.” South beat Boyle 44-28 and Southern 42-30 before falling to the Mustangs in the final dual.
  • Girls Basketball: Guards key Lady Dragons' first win
    CRESTWOOD – Carroll County had the size advantage Tuesday night, but South Oldham had the better guards. As a result the Lady Dragons notched their first win of the season and first under their new coaching staff. Senior point guard Abbey Van Zant scored 13 points and tallied 8 assists as South beat the Lady Panthers 51-35 in an early season Region 8 matchup. Senior guard Sydney Jones and senior wing Erin Wilson each added 11 points for the Lady Dragons (1-1).
  • Girls Soccer: South’s Tucker stepping down as head coach
    Cy Tucker spoke throughout South Oldham’s run to the girls soccer state championship last month of the team writing a new chapter in a great novel. The Lady Dragons capped that chapter by beating Owensboro Catholic to win the school’s seventh state title. The next will be written with one of its starring characters no longer in a lead role. Tucker is resigning as South’s head coach effective at the beginning of January, he told the team at its year-end banquet last week.
  • Wrestling: Colonels win home meet
    BUCKNER – Oldham County has hosted its annual Super Duals for 14 years but had never won the meet until last year. The Colonels soundly defended their title Saturday. OC beat Male 54-22 in the semifinals and Meade County 60-21 in the finals to win the 12-team Super Duals for the second straight year. The victory was an early-season “confidence-builder” for the Colonels, coach Aaron Riordan said.
  • Football: Clark, Jones win MVP awards
    North Oldham’s Matt Clark and Ryan Jones each won MVP awards at the Greater Louisville East-West All-Star Game on Sunday in Louisville. Clark, a senior wide receiver, was named the East team’s Offensive MVP after catching four passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. He also had one carry for eight yards. Jones, a senior linebacker, was named Defensive MVP after making five tackles and blocking a punt.
  • Swimming: North finishes second at Sacred Heart Invitational
    North Oldham’s boys and girls swim teams combined to finish second at the Sacred Heart Invitational Saturday in Louisville. The teams posted a total score of 365, second only to Sycamore (Ohio) (438). North’s boys (231) finished second to Sycamore (271). South Oldham (135) came in fourth in the 11-team boys competition. North (134) was fourth in the girls meet behind Sacred Heart (240), Christian Academy-Louisville (212) and Sycamore (167). South (32) was 10th out of the 15 girls teams that competed.
  • Boys Basketball: Dragons fall just short in tense opener
    CRESTWOOD – South Oldham and its almost entirely new roster had a chance to make an early splash Thursday night against Region 8 contender Shelby County. But Matt Cantinna’s potential game-tying 3-pointer came off the rim at the buzzer and the Rockets held on for a 70-67 road win. The two-time defending region champion Dragons (0-1) lost every player that had meaningful varsity time last season except for junior guards Isaac Fields and Grant Williams.
