Sitting in the back of his Pewee Valley consignment furniture store, Clover Cottage, Kevin Wirth smiles while recollecting his past sporting ventures.
For more than 30 years, Wirth has been in the limelight, first as a Kentucky Derby jockey, then as a professional fisherman in which he earned over $1 million before he retired in February. He still has a hand in horse racing, but the rush isn’t the same.
The South Oldham High School girls basketball team’s season ended with a loss to Walton-Verona in the eighth region championship game, but recognition for the Lady Dragons’ season isn’t over.
SOHS senior Jasmine Whitfield has been named the eighth region’s co-player of the year, along with Owen County senior guard Rianna Gayheart, by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches. Whitfield has also been named a finalist for the Kentucky Miss Basketball award, which will be announced April 28.

The beginning of one of the top tae kwon do tournaments in the world didn’t go well for Kendall Yount.
A student at Kentucky Tae Kwon Do in Crestwood, Yount faced a 6-0 deficit in her first round bout.
But Yount came back to win the match on her way to capturing a gold medal in the 14-17-year old middleweight division Feb. 21-24 at the U.S. Open tae kwon do championships in Las Vegas.
Another student at Kentucky Tae Kwon Do, Dana DeYoung, also won a gold medal in the 33-40-year old middleweight division.
LAWRENCEBURG — There’s been only one team in the eighth region that’s been able to claim superiority over the South Oldham High School girls’ basketball team.
On Sunday afternoon, it happened again.
Despite cutting a 12-point deficit to one with over a minute to go, the Lady Dragons again couldn’t catch Walton-Verona, falling 52-47 in the eighth region championship game at Anderson County High School.
BEDFORD — As a missed shot by Oldham County High School senior guard Parker Simpson caromed off the rim, senior guard Kerry Smith came leaping in towards the rim un guarded from the left post.
Smith attempted to dunk the ball but lost the handle.
The ball popped up in the air as high as the top of the backboard and swished through the net on its way back down.
BEDFORD — With three minutes left, the game had been decided for some time.
With the South Oldham girls’ basketball starters on the bench, Lady Dragons’ Coach Frank Wright walked from the seat closest to mid-court and made his way down the SOHS bench.
Wright high-fived each of the Lady Dragons’ players and coaches, congratulating them on another district title.

I hope you all enjoyed last week's chat, with North Oldham High School swimming coach Kris Krohn, whose swimmers had an impressive showing at the region meet and are looking for some high finishes at the state meet this weekend at the University of Louisville.
LOUISVILLE — Because of her fifth-place finish in the preliminaries of the 200-yard individual medley, North Oldham High School eighth-grader Asia Seidt swam the finals in the outside, seventh lane.
But Seidt responded with a powerful swim to finish second in 2:05.12.
Behind Seidt, the Lady Mustangs pulled out a fourth place finish with 111 points Feb. 18 at the Region Two Championships at the University of Louisville’s Ralph Wright Natatorium.
Shortly after her sophomore year at South Oldham High School concluded, girls’ soccer midfielder Marissa Williams began visiting colleges.
She’d planned a trip to the University of Alabama-Birmingham, but at the urging of her father, Jim Williams, Marissa also visited Mississippi State University.
That afterthought visit sealed her decision.
