  • District 29 seeds set, South gets No. 1

South Oldham was upset by North Oldham Monday night, but the Dragons are still in prime position for the upcoming District 29 boys basketball tournament.

South (15-3, 2-1 District 29) will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament, which will be played two weeks from now at North.

OC (18-5, 2-1) will be the second seed, North (11-12, 2-1) will be No. 3 and Trimble County (9-11, 0-3) will be the fourth seed. The winners of the South vs. Trimble and North vs. OC games will advance to the Region 8 tournament.

  • Colonels outlast Simon Kenton

BUCKNER – There’s a good chance Oldham County and Simon Kenton will meet one month from now in New Castle in the Region 8 Tournament. If so, the Colonels will hope to get a similar result to the one they tallied Friday night.

OC used a 33-point fourth quarter to overcome a nine-point deficit and beat the Pioneers 72-65. The Colonels once again featured a balanced attack, with Austin Wills scoring 19 points, Connor Hicks scoring 17, Hayden Hawes pouring in 16 and Austin Perkins adding 14.

  • South at North boys postponed to Monday

We’ll have to wait a little longer to see North Oldham and South Oldham square off in boys basketball.

Due to inclement weather, the Dragons-Mustangs matchup scheduled for tonight will be played at 7:30 p.m. Monday at North.

That game bumps South’s matchup with Iroquois, originally scheduled for Monday, off the schedule. The Iroquois game likely won’t be made up, South AD Mitchell Irvin said.

South’s district girls game at Trimble County has been postponed to Wednesday, Feb. 12.

  • All Feb. 4 basketball games canceled

A winter storm projected to hit Oldham County Tuesday afternoon has forced a cancelation of the night’s slate of basketball games.

One of those games is the annual regular season boys game between North Oldham and South Oldham, scheduled to be played at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at North. That game has been postponed to the same time Wednesday.

Oldham County’s boys game at Eastern has also been canceled, with no makeup date yet announced.

  • Oldham finishes 2nd in big school state duals

MT. STERLING – Oldham County took down an old foe Saturday on its way to its best team duals finish in program history.

The Colonels beat Fern Creek in the big school semifinals before falling to St. Xavier in the championship dual of the Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association tournament at the Montgomery County High School Arena. The event wasn’t affiliated with the KHSAA wrestling championships, which will take place later this month in Lexington.

  • Sweet 16 pairings drawn, 8th girls get 3rd, 8th boys get 2nd

The road to a 2014 state title won’t be easy for any team coming out of Region 8.

Brackets for the girls and boys Sweet 16 tournaments were drawn Monday afternoon during a special KHSAA selection show.

The Region 8 girls champion will face the Region 3 champ in the first round of the Girls Sweet 16 at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. Meanwhile the Region 8 boys champ will face the Region 2 champ at noon Wednesday, March 19 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

  • Basketball notebook: Henry a one-man show for North Thursday

BUCKNER – Jon Jon Henry was a load for North Oldham Thursday night. The junior scored 19 points and shot more free throws (21) than Oldham County’s entire team (16).

But when the fourth quarter came around, the Colonels found a way to slow Henry down in their 62-48 district win.

OC (14-5, 2-1 District 29) drove Henry to the sidelines in backcourt when he took the ball up, forcing the ball out of his hands. He scored just one point in the fourth quarter.

  • OC sets tone early, pulls away late to beat North

BUCKNER – Oldham County players said they were tired of hearing talk from North Oldham students going into the schools’ annual regular season battle Thursday.

Once the ball was tipped, OC’s play spoke for itself.

The Colonels took a big first quarter lead, held on through the middle of the game then pulled away at the end to beat North 62-48 Thursday night.
