  • Colonels hang on for first-round win

    LEXINGTON — In a close game, Oldham County High School pulled out a win in the first round of state championship play Thursday.

    OCHS defeated Bowling Green High School 55-48 at Rupp Arena during open rounds of the KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament.

    "Coming in we knew it was gonna be a great game because Bowling Green's a good team," OCHS Coach Jason Holland said. "We tried to slow them down and I was proud of my guys for battling for 32 minutes."

  • Colonels defend region crown with 50-40 win over Collins

    NEW CASTLE — With 11.8 seconds remaining in the game, the chants came roaring from the Oldham County High School student section.

    “Rupp! A-re-na! Rupp, Rupp A-re-na!”

    The Colonels are once again eighth region boys’ basketball champions after pulling away Tuesday night for a 50-40 victory over Martha Layne Collins in the eighth region championship game at Henry County High School.

  • Colonels pull away late to claim district over South

    BEDFORD — As a missed shot by Oldham County High School senior guard Parker Simpson caromed off the rim, senior guard Kerry Smith came leaping in towards the rim un guarded from the left post.

    Smith attempted to dunk the ball but lost the handle.

    The ball popped up in the air as high as the top of the backboard and swished through the net on its way back down.

  • Lady Dragons roll over OC for district crown

    BEDFORD — With three minutes left, the game had been decided for some time.

    With the South Oldham girls’ basketball starters on the bench, Lady Dragons’ Coach Frank Wright walked from the seat closest to mid-court and made his way down the SOHS bench.

    Wright high-fived each of the Lady Dragons’ players and coaches, congratulating them on another district title.

  • OCMS basketball finishes as state semi-finalist

    Oldham County Middle School’s sixth-grade basketball team came up short in its goal of winning a state championship.

    But before the season began, center Griffin Snyder didn’t expect to come close to that goal.

    The Colonels concluded their season at 30-4 and as state semi-finalists at the Kentucky Basketball Academy sixth grade state tournament Jan. 21 in Lexington.

    “It was like accomplishing a dream that you never knew you had,” he said. “It felt amazing.”

  • Shirkey's third tops among Oldham wrestlers at state

    LEXINGTON — The semi-finals at the KHSAA state wrestling tournament wiped out any chance North Oldham, Oldham County or South Oldham had of a state championship.

    But despite a semi-final loss, OCHS freshman John Shirkey said he quickly regained his focus. After all, his day and his season were not done yet.

    Following his only loss of the state tournament, Shirkey pulled together two wins to take third place at 113 pounds.

  • Duncan, McIntosh take state titles

    It didn’t take long for Oldham County Middle School eighth grader Alex McIntosh to go from chump to champ.

    In just his second year wrestling, McIntosh is a state champion.

    McIntosh won the 168-pound weight class at the Kentucky Middle School Wrestling State Tournament Feb. 4 at Montgomery County, with an 8-4 win in the finals over Verity Middle School’s Grant Krueger.

  • Gnadinger and Rusch come through

    CRESTWOOD – Late in the 182-pound wrestling finals Saturday at the South Oldham Dragon Invitational, Oldham County High School senior Zac Gnadinger broke through a deadlocked match.

    Gnadinger and North Oldham senior Chase Rusch both picked up wins in their weight classes with late moves.

    Thanks to a late grapple, Gnadinger  pulled off a big upset over St. Xavier’s Will Tompkins 3-1. Tompkins is ranked No. 2 in the state in the weight class by KentuckyWrestling.com.

    The members of Oldham County’s girls’ basketball team sat dejected in their locker room following their 59-31 loss to Martha Layne Collins.

    Coach Stephen Mullins and Assistant Coach Jeff Walton spoke to the team after the game, but Walton didn’t offer the typical pick-me-up.
