  • River Daze has great weather, local...

    To the editor:

    The 10th annual Westport River Daze festival was a huge success.  We couldn’t have asked for better weather and a prettier day.

  • Foster finds gastronimical surprise...

    Below are excerpts from former staff writer John Foster’s blog about his adventures in Peru. Foster and his wife, Lori, left the Bluegrass state Sept. 15 and traveled to Peru where they’ll spend nine months working in an orphanage. 

    Staffers of The Oldham Era were particularly moved by a photograph taken by Foster of a young boy listening to a volunteer’s iPod in a garden outside the orphanage, and the image of the boy’s toes poking through the bottom of his shoe soles.

    Field hockey team deserves coverage 

    To the editor:

    I’d like to take this opportunity to let your readers know, South Oldham High School has a field hockey team. This program began six years ago at the high school. 

    You may not know this because The Oldham Era, for reasons unknown, does not report any coverage in their paper for this team.

    I‘m concerned over the direction our schools seem to be taking. I fear Oldham is just a few steps behind the Jefferson County school system. That isn’t a compliment.

    Villains get punished and heroes triumph in well-made plays and books. In life it’s not easy to say who’s who. Most of us are heroic sometimes and villainous other times. Our lives are an uneven mixture of triumph, reward, and hanging-in. Unjust events happen: children die, airplanes crash, rivers flood. The world contains starvation and abundance, violence and gentleness in its pattern.

  • Council members respond to mayor...

    To the editor:

    To maintain the city’s quiet zone, we must install median separators at the intersection of First and Main, and either close the south side of Second Street or install crossing gates by June. 

    Mayor Carter blames the city council for its plans to close Second Street and maintain the quiet zone. The city council has only voted on a resolution regarding safety improvements at the Second Street crossing to meet CSX regulations. A decision to close Second Street can only be done by ordinance, and a second reading of that ordinance is Nov. 2.

    Ironman competitor grateful to La Grange

    On Aug. 30, 2009 I witnessed one of the most exciting and outrageous moments in my Ironman career. Aside from the finish chute, flying through La Grange was second to none. 

    Your community support should be the envy of cities across America. I made it a point to hold my right hand out to slap as many screaming fans as I could even at the risk of crashing at 23 mph. That was how important it was for me to show my appreciation to your community at that moment. 

  • Most likely to leave town

    Nearly 10 years ago it was yearbook time. Faced with the prospect of probably never seeing most of these people again, I struggled to find something meaningful to say to my friends, thinking I was gone from Oldham County forever other than occasional visits to my parents.

    But I was drawn back. Call it fate, choice, whatever. I was partly disappointed that, like George Bailey, I never made it out of my hometown; partly excited that I had the chance to be a positive force in the community I’m from.

    ‘Can’t-do’ council votes to close 2nd St. 

    To the editor:

    Despite being told by residents of La Grange that they want their council to do everything possible to keep Second Street open, the La Grange city council played politics Monday night and voted to close it.

    This council assured residents at the July meeting that they’d do everything in their power to keep Second Street open, yet Monday they showed they aren’t willing to do anything to accomplish that.

    Learning to ride a bike. Picking blackberries with my sister. My first “big catch” going fishing at grandpa’s. College days. Marrying my college sweetheart. The birth of my daughter. My son losing his first tooth. Assisting my husband as he coached youth soccer. Cookouts and camping with my parents. Church revivals. Family and friends. 

    All of these memories are etched into the story of my old Kentucky home.

    Adult education programs offered 

    To the editor:

    “It’s all about being here”– this is the motto for the 2009-10 year for the students in the Oldham County Adult Education Program. This program is grant funded through the Kentucky Adult Education Program with both state and federal funds. Our goal is to assist any adult that is not currently enrolled in a secondary program establish and work on educational goals.

  • Balancing tension

    Have you ever watched a tight-rope walker? Maybe you noticed the performer carries a balance bar. Ever so carefully he moves the bar from side-to-side in order to keep his balance Now life is something like this for us. You and I are negotiating the difficult, if different, courses of our lives. 

    Life means action and action means other people. Other people mean that there will be some friction, and friction often results in stress. Some of this stress is helpful and positive. Some of it is negative and harmful. We badly need our balance bars.

    In September 2005, we started LOCAL Transit. 

    Our intent was to provide a new service that would benefit Oldham County residents. Most know we are a small, but dedicated nonprofit agency which focuses on those who use our services. 

    We do what we do because of our Christian faith and commitment.

  • Our thoughts become you

    What people think about determines what they are. Hawthorne tells about the boy, Ernest, who would look longingly at the great stone face on the side of the mountain. It was a strong, kind, honorable face that thrilled the heart of this boy. 

    There was a legend that some day a man would appear who would look like the great stone face. Through all his childhood, and even after he became a man, Ernest kept looking at the great face and for the man who was like it.

    Historic district guidelines are clear

    To the editor:

    I’m shocked at David  Voegele’s choice of adjectives when describing behavior of the La Grange Historic District Commission. (Letters to the Editor, Aug. 13 edition).

    The council meeting included an appeal of the decision by the LHDC to deny a certificate of appropriateness for a sign. 

    The historic district guidelines, available at the city of La Grange Web site, are clear.

     I’m not a runner.

    I never have been. Never in my history have I been that person who wakes up before the sun for a quick morning run. Honestly, I’d prefer to never be that person who wakes up before the sun’s out at all.

    The following are comments heard during the Ironman Triathlon last year:

    “We are so glad you are open.”

    “Sometimes shops in small towns are closed during Ironman.”

  • Remembering a great man

    I used to play baseball, and my Dad went to the games because he was always interested in whatever his children did. I remember one game especially. It was a tight game, and I happened to get a long hit. I was running around the bases as fast as I could, but I seemed to gain added strength when I heard him shouting above the crowd, “Come on home, Bob, come on home.”
