Committee meetings have begun again, which mark one of the first steps a bill must go through on its way to become law.

Residents not angered by appointmentTo the editor:I don’t know why it is felt that the residents were angered. Four people came to a meeting prepared to do the job they were elected to do. They did not procrastinate about doing their job. Just went on and did it. There was no time to waste as it had already been wasted. Thirty days is all that is allowed by law to replace a council member, 25 had been used with all the waiting. After 30 days the governor would appoint our councilmember.

Each year many people use January as their start date for making positive changes in their lives. If your New Year’s resolution is to remove tobacco from your life, good for you! Quitting is the most important thing people can do to improve their health. There are many choices to help people quit smoking; however only certain treatments have been proven effective. These are:• Prescription medications including bupropion SR (Zyban or Wellbutrin) and newly approved varenicline (Chantix).

And if you’re thinking that must have something to do with funny looking cardboard glasses at the movie theaters, well – not so. 3-D month was created by President Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s to increase community awareness of the problems associated with impaired driving and to promote the use of designated drivers. 3-D is short for Drugged, Drunk and Driving Prevention Month. With the 2007 elections now behind us, it is time to turn our attention back to the business of the Commonwealth.

Last Tuesday, Steve Beshear was sworn in as governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. With the administration of that oath comes the inevitable change associated with a new administration in Frankfort. At this point, there is a great deal of uncertainty about what form that change will take. Some change will be dictated by financial constraints. Others will be dictated by the policy directions of the new governor.
