    Schoolhouse restoration underway in...

    Due to the efforts and generosity of many volunteers, work resumed this winter on the historic Westport schoolhouse.

    Larry Hedges, a local contractor, launched the rehabilitation, turning the old one-room school originally built in 1882 into a museum and community center.

    The National Trust for Historic Preservation matched money for the design efforts.

    The American Cancer Society is encouraging Oldham County residents to help fight cancer, and have some fun, too, by signing up for Relay for Life.
    Relay for Life is an all-night event established to raise funds “so that everyone can celebrate another birthday,” said event Chair Lisa Austin.

    Oldham County Cooperative Extension Services presented the Leader of the Year Award to a dedicated community volunteer Tuesday morning.
    Extension Leader of the Year Faye Korthaus of Smithfield has served as president of Poplar Grove Homemakers, which was the first homemaker club in Oldham County, and of Oldham County Homemakers.

    A cool rain greeted performers as they entered the Oldham County Arts Center Feb. 24. The event drew talent of all ages during auditions for the second-annual Oldham Icon contest.

    A North Oldham High School student who got a golden ticket to Hollywood in July left American Idol during Thursday's episode. 

    Brandy Neelly, who appeared on the Hollywood week episodes of American Idol made it to the Top 100.

    A family that fell on hard times last month is getting by with heaps of support from their community, and an auspicious contest win.
    Traci Fawbush’s house was destroyed Jan. 5 after a space heater caught fire in an upstairs bedroom.
    A neighbor called her at work that day, saying there was smoke emanating from the upper floor of Fawbush’s River Bluff home.

  • EOMS water jar exhibit runs two...

    An exhibit featuring artists from East Oldham Middle School starts this week at the Oldham County Schools Arts Center.
    EOMS artists opened a water jar show Tuesday and the display will be open for two weeks.
    All water jars are for sale at a cost of $10 each. Proceeds benefit the Haiti Water Project.

  • Goshen students spread the love

    Students at Goshen Elementary are spreading the love to Africa this Valentine’s Day.
    The school’s two fifth grade classes have begun collecting soccer balls and basketballs which they plan to send to children in Kenya this spring. The project is part of a school-wide service requirement.

    Molly Malone enjoys the simple things: spending time with family, a Sunday afternoon nap and quality time with her chew toys.
    Outside of her ordinary life, though, this 9-year-old Labrador retriever is being feted as a hero by local animal welfare groups.

    A North Oldham High School student who got a golden ticket to Hollywood in July is leaving local American Idol viewers on the edge of their seats.

    Brandy Neelly is expected to appear on tonight's episode of American Idol after performing "Forget You" by Cee Lo Green during group night on Wednesday's episode.

    Prathers visit Johnson Space Center...

    Ray and Treva Prather of La Grange recently visited the Johnson Space Center in Texas, located just a few miles from their daughter and son-in-law, Meresa and Lew Fincher's, home. During their visit, NASA’s Lead Meteorologist, Doris Hood,  offered a special tour of the space shuttle’s mission control room.

    Zumba Holiday Xtravaganza is a fundraising event to benefit to support the Center for Women and Families and the Office of Multicultural Ministries.

    Ed Menzenksi — the La Grange man widely known as “Birdman” by strangers who spot him on the streets with his pet parrot, Toby — is flying the coop.

    He’s the lone male in his house. He’s married and has five daughters – two biological and three adopted. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
    Daniel, an Oldham County resident, and his wife, Lisa, attended an event Friday at the Oldham County Courthouse in honor of National Adoption Day, celebrating adoptive families.
    It’s a far cry from where Daniel used to be, when he said the word “adopt” didn’t exist in his vocabulary.

     Lou DeVincentis was born July 26, 1939 in McKeesport, Pa., which is a suburb of Pittsburgh. His parents were Alfred DeVincentis  and Josephine Park DeVincentis. His grandparents came over from Italy and settled in western Pennsylvania. The following is his oral history, as recorded and transcribed by Oldham County History Center Director Nancy Theiss.
