  • New rector at St. James’...

    St. James’ Episcopal Church in Pewee Valley recently welcomed a new rector, the Rev. Jim Trimble.  

    Trimble is a Louisville native who worked in public broadcasting before becoming an Episcopal priest.

    A graduate of Waggener High School and Murray State University, Trimble worked at several public radio stations in Kentucky and North Carolina. 

    He began seminary studies in 2002 at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, graduating with a master of divinity degree.  He was ordained a priest in December 2005.

  • Chamber explores merger of local...

    In June, the boards of the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce and the Oldham County Economic Development Authority will decide whether to merge into one new economic development agency. 

    For more than six months, a committee of chamber and business leaders have discussed such a venture. After numerous meetings and discussions, we encourage the business community to get behind this initiative. 

  • Jump-A-Thon

    After collecting the most money of any class for the recent Jump-A-Thon at Harmony Elementary, third- and fourth-grade teacher Jessica Thornton knows what she’s getting herself into. Water balloons. Lots of water balloons. Thornton, along with the rest of Harmony Elementary, raised more than $3,000 during a week-long fund raising campaign for the Relay for Life of Oldham County, culminating with a Jump-A-Thon on the final day.

  • ‘Voice of the Fugitive...

    The Oldham County History Center presents “Voice of the Fugitive,” beginning May 29 at Actors Theatre in Louisville. The center announces its 2009 Juneteenth Celebration with the production, based on the narratives of Kentucky slave, freed man, abolitionist and separatist, Henry Bibb.  Bibb escaped the bonds of slavery and became an abolitionist and leader of the Separatist movement. He established a Refugee Colony for slaves in Canada and became the first black editor of a Canadian newspaper. Performances are 7:30 p.m.

  • Calling in the AHG Blanket Brigade

    American Heritage Girls Troop Ky. 412 spent a recent Thursday evening tying fleece blankets to fill duffel bags for the HOST House in La Grange. The HOST House Crisis Care Service is a refuge for teens in Oldham, Shelby, Trimble and Henry counties. 

  • Dillman graduates from U.S. Air...

    U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Jeffrey M. Dillman recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of MaryEllen and Jay Brandi of La Grange and Martin and Missy Dillman of Louisville. He is a 2003 graduate of South Oldham High School.

    Students celebrate SWAT Derby

    La Grange Elementary celebrated their annual “SWAT Derby” event hosted by the instructional assistants – known as Super Women at All Times – with entry fees benefitting the Oldham County Relay for Life. Cardstock horse cutouts are decoratively bejeweled and transformed into racehorse characters reflecting the unique personality of each contender.  Creativity abounds with horses named Paws for Nothing, Clothes Horse, Victorious Secret, Purple Rein and Anita Job to name a few of this year’s 57 horse field.

  • Tincher will sign books in La Grange

    Lynn Tincher, a Louisville author and publisher of The Literary Lynnch Pen, will sign books from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Karen’s Book Barn and Java Shop in La Grange.

    She will  sign copies of her psychological thriller, “Afterthoughts, 2nd Edition.” She will donate 10 percent of the profits from the book to the American Cancer Society. Karen’s Book Barn and Java Shop is located at 127 E. Main St. in La Grange.  For information, call 222-0918.

    National Exhibit on Display at...

    Every year, new horses and jockeys ride into legend competing in the Kentucky Derby. But this year, Pegasus, Black Beauty and more than 70 other human and equine heroes from equestrian legend will gallop alongside them in a nationally-touring exhibit hosted by the new Oldham County Public Library through May 24.

    Mr. and  Mrs. George Coons of La Grange announce the engagement of their daughter, Lindsey R. Boler to Joshua L. Strader of La Grange. 

    The bride-elect is the daughter of the late Danny Manns.  The groom-elect is the son of Clifford Strader and Cindy Peal of Lorain, Ohio.  The wedding will take place at 3:45 p.m. July 26 at Duncan Memorial Chapel.  Invitations will be sent.

     It has been over 100 years since the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem, its walls and the temple. When the Persians defeat the Babylonians King Cyrus sets all the deported people free. Nehemiah is in Susa, the capital of Persia during the reign of Artxerxes, serving as the king’s cupbearer. Nehemiah hears a bad report of what is going on in Jerusalem, and fasts and prays. The king sees Nehemiah’s sadness and asks how he can help.

  • Shape Note Convention is Saturday...

     The 14th session of the Harrods Creek Shape Note Convention will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Harrods Creek Baptist Church. 

    Everyone is invited and festivities include “Dinner on the Grounds” during the day and a chili supper Satruday night. Tunebooks for the event are 1991 Sacred Harp, Cooper and Southern Harmony.

  • Covenant UMC will host Town Hall...

    Covenant UMC is offering people the chance to participate in an event with faith-based financial guru Dave Ramsey at 8 p.m. today (Thursday). Thousands of venues across the country will host Town Hall for Hope, broadcasting Ramsey’s live presentation. In the opening half hour, Ramsey will offer straight talk about the economy, recession, foreclosures and more. He’ll carefully explain where we’ve come from, where we are now, and what we should be doing with our money at this time.
