The Open Door Christian Store in Crestwood is participating in the 2009 Operation Worship Bibles for Troops Campaign.

Guests  can come to the store and buy and sign a Bible that will be given to an active-duty member of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps who is serving somewhere in the world.

Across the nation a new effort is underway to sign and send 500,000 Bibles to our troops by Christmas. The response of the American public has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are proud our community is doing its part in supporting this campaign. 

Liz and John Grabowski were married on October 3, 1959, in North Camp Drake, Tokyo, Japan. John is a retired operations manager from Coca-Cola Louisville. Liz is a nurse practitioner and owner of Diabetes Clinical Services, PSC in Louisville.

They celebrate with their children, Beth and Len Taylor of Louisville, Julie and Scott Smith of Crestwood, Suzana and John Grabowski of Houston and Emilia and George Felty of Fairbanks. 

Their grandchildren are Alexis Taylor, MaryAnn Smith and Jessica Smith.

The Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty Walk is 2 p.m. Sunday.

Local organizers include La Grange and Crestwood Christian churches, Covenant United Methodist, Beulah Land Baptist, La Grange Presbyterian, the Kiwanis Club and the Oldham County School Board. 

Of the money raised, 25 percent will help support The Foundation of Hope, a food bank sponsored by Beulah Land Baptist Church.

The Rev. Timothy King and family will minister at Salem Assembly of God during the 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. services Oct. 11. Rev. King is a graduate of Oldham County High School and is pastor of Solid Rock Assembly of God in VanCleve.

The occasion is the 37th anniversary of Salem Assembly of God, and the 27th anniversary of Pastor and Mrs. LaVern H. Snyder. 

The public is invited to attend.

Casting crews are still looking for extras – especially males – for the upcoming movie, “Secretariat.” 

They are looking for adult males of all types, golfers, businessmen, those with military experience, law enforcement backgrounds, jockeys, horse handlers and other track positions.

The Oldham County History Center is celebrating Kentucky Archives Month with its new exhibit, “Primary Docs: The Museum Collection.”

The exhibit features unique documents, letters and artifacts of Oldham County, many of which have never been on display.  Items include original land deeds signed by Patrick Henry as well as a hand copy of a deed from the 1700s with Thomas Jefferson’s signature.  There is a section on deeds and early court records, sheriff summons, and bounty contracts for runaway slaves. 

Robert C. Maddox recently entered basic cadet training at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy.

The six-week, two-phased orientation program must be successfully completed by the cadets prior to entering their freshman year.  The training prepares men and women to meet the rigorous mental and physical challenges experienced by new cadets.

An All-Nations Intertribal Festival will take place Sept. 19 and 20 at Westport Commons in Westport.

The annual event features Native American music, dancing, food and demonstrations. Demonstrations will start at 10 a.m. Sept. 19 and noon Sept. 20. 

The Grand Entry will take place at 1 p.m.  

The cost of admission for adults is $5, for children ages 8 to 14 it is $2.50.  

Westport Commons is located off Ky. 524, 3 miles from U.S. 42.

U.S. Army National Guard Pfc. Stephanie E. Sullivan recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, Sullivan studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values amd physical fitness. 

She received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching and rifle marksmanship.
