Oldham County's Jason Holland accepts head coaching position at Montgomery County.

Jason Holland will be the new head boys' basketball coach at Montgomery County High School, Oldham County Athletic Director Kevin Combs confirmed Wednesday.
Holland leaves the Colonels with a 92-38 record in his four years at Oldham County along with three district championships and two regional championships. The Colonels advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament under his watch during the 2011-12 season and were the Eighth Region runner-up last year.

Animal control officer arrested for taking $25

An animal control officer who is owed more than $100,000 by county government for back pay and overtime has been arrested for allegedly taking $25 and forging paperwork related to a lost dog.

Police arrested Elmer James “Jim” Nichter Jr., 47, of La Grange, May 15 for forgery, official misconduct and theft from the Oldham County Animal Shelter.

According to court documents, the charges stem from an incident May 6 when a woman visited the Oldham County Animal Shelter in Buckner to claim her lost pet.

School board approves budget for coming year

The Oldham County Board of Education adopted a tentative budget that eliminates $3 million and more than 50 jobs next year.

Superintendent Will Wells recommended the reduced budget at the school board’s meeting Monday.

Board members were not unanimous in their decision. District 2 representative Walt Schumm voted against the proposed budget.

Starting July 1, the school district will have less money and fewer employees.

Most jobs will come out of classrooms and the transportation department.

Agreement gives OCPD officers limited authority in Jefferson Co.

Oldham County Police Department officers now have the authority to operate in Jefferson County.

Oldham County Fiscal Court approved an inter-local agreement between OCPD and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday.

Under the new agreement, OCPD officers have the ability to conduct investigations and pursue cars across the county line.

Previously, officers had no authority to continue a chase if a suspect crossed into Jefferson County.

State GED tests free through July 31

With a price hike looming, the state is offering its GED test for free for the next 10 weeks.

Kentucky Adult Education will waive the $60 fee for Kentuckians who take the high school equivalency test before July 31.

Starting Jan. 1, 2014, test fees will jump to $120.

The GED will also be retooled to comply with the Kentucky Department of Education’s Common Core Standards.

The tougher educational guidelines were passed as legislation in 2009 and implemented in the 2011-12 school year.

Goshen man found passed out behind the wheel in S-curve

A Goshen man who drove his vehicle onto the narrow shoulder of Ky. 329 near Nevel Meade golf course faces a DUI charge.

Police found Dennis M. Barrett Jr., 21, 1000 block of Forest Lane, Goshen, passed out behind the wheel of his 1999 silver Mitsubishi Eclipse about 5:30 a.m. May 2.

It took several minutes for officers to wake him, police said.  

A passerby thought Barrett’s vehicle had crashed in a dangerous stretch of Ky. 329.

State highway projects set to move forward

Oldham County Fiscal Court Tuesday approved a trio of road construction projects in the county’s rural areas.

The proposals include a bridge overlay on Ky. 1694 over Harrods Creek and two resurfacing projects on Ky. 1315 and Ky. 1818.

The Ky. 1315 resurface will stretch for two miles from Floyds Fork to Ky. 53.

The Ky. 1818 project will run from Neda Way to Ky. 1315.

State crews will also be working on U.S. 42 this summer Construction will cover approximately 13 miles from Ky. 1694 east to the Henry County line.

Destiny in Orb-it!

The result of the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby was satisfying in a lot of ways.
For the owners of Orb and trainer Shug McGaughey, they finally got that equine monkey off their backs.
All you needed to know, you saw on Shug’s face as the NBC cameras showed his expression right after Orb crossed the finish line first. Shug had that same “cat-that-ate-the-canary” look all week.

LOCAL TEAMS COMPETE AT STATE TRACK AND FIELD MEET

Entering Friday’s Class AA Track and Field Championships, North Oldham’s Maggie Mollak just wanted to be competitive in both of her events.
When she was finished at the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Park, it was mission accomplished — and more.
Mollak, a sophomore, opened up the night by earning a third place finish in the shot put, then capped off her season by claiming a state championship in the discus.
She is the only competitor from Oldham County able to make that claim.
