The Era remembers Publisher Tony...

Give us a moment to gather our thoughts – we've had a death in the family.

Publisher Tony Cotten, the athlete who raced his bicycle through our office, the mentor who instilled confidence in us and the coach who challenged us to do our best, died today (Thursday) at his home in La Grange.

Tony left his Indiana roots in December 2010 to lead The Oldham Era.

Oldham Co. Animal Control...

An animal control officer who is owed more than $100,000 by Oldham County government for back pay and overtime has been arrested for taking $25 and forging paperwork.

Police arrested Elmer James "Jim" Nichter Jr., 47, of La Grange, on Wednesday for forgery, official misconduct and theft from the Oldham County Animal Shelter.

Funeral arrangements for Tony...

Funeral arrangements for Tony L. Cotten:

Visitation will be Monday, May 13 from 5-8 p.m. at Woodland Heights Christian Church in Crawfordsville, Ind.

A funeral service will take place Tuesday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at Woodland Heights with Rev. Tony Thomas officiating. Burial will follow immediately at Freedom Cemetery in Waveland, Ind.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Relay for Life organization in your community.

La Grange set to tax employee...

Workers in La Grange may soon see smaller paychecks.

The La Grange City Council will vote June 3 to impose a 1 percent occupational tax to pay the city’s debt on the Oldham Reserve business park.

All wages paid by businesses within the city limits will be subject to the tax.

La Grange Mayor Bill Lammlein proposed a similar tax in August, but later scrapped the plan.

The city currently owes more than $10 million on a pair of bonds, only one of which the city has been able to make payments on, Lammlein said.

Oldham Co. schools to get...

Oldham County Schools will spend more than $1.5 million to beef up security at all of its facilities.

The upgrades were unanimously approved by the Board of Education late last month.

The bulk of the money will be used to add or enhance security measures at the district’s 18 school buildings.

Upgrades include interior and exterior video surveillance; electronically secured entrances; access control entry systems; exterior door positioning switches; intercoms for visitor entry; and an emergency dispatch alert system.

Oldham County's Jason...

Jason Holland will be the new head boys' basketball coach at Montgomery County High School, Oldham County Athletic Director Kevin Combs confirmed Wednesday.
Holland leaves the Colonels with a 92-38 record in his four years at Oldham County along with three district championships and two regional championships. The Colonels advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament under his watch during the 2011-12 season and were the Eighth Region runner-up last year.

Destiny in Orb-it!

The result of the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby was satisfying in a lot of ways.
For the owners of Orb and trainer Shug McGaughey, they finally got that equine monkey off their backs.
All you needed to know, you saw on Shug’s face as the NBC cameras showed his expression right after Orb crossed the finish line first. Shug had that same “cat-that-ate-the-canary” look all week.

Three OC athletes win regional...

Three local athletes can call themselves regional champs after Thursday's Class AAA Region 4 meet at Christian Acdemy. Winners include Aaron Gelnett, who won both the discus and shot put; Whitney Schuyler, who won the pole vault, and Ashley Reyna-padilla, who won the 100-meter hurdles.

Five athletes win regional...

Five local athletes can call themselves regional champs after Wednesday's Class AA Region 3 meet. North Oldham winners include Brianne Brown, who won both the 100-meter hurdles and long jump; Maggie Mollak, who won both the discus and shot put, and Haley Oliver, who won the pole vault.
Winners from South Oldham include Tanner Dowdy, who finished first in the 3200-meter run, and Tony Brackins, who finished first in the long jump.
