  • It's never to late to get into good physical shape

Looking for inspiration to get in shape? On Dec. 14, a buddy of mine, Bob Bowes, celebrated his 65th birthday in style. No, he did not go on a Caribbean cruise. He didn’t bar hop. As a matter of fact – he didn’t eat a piece of birthday cake.Bob invited friends and relatives to join him in South Carolina to do a “Century Ride” on bicycles.Yes, that word century means 100. Yes, we’re talking miles and yes, bikes that have pedals – not Harleys.

  • A sale we didn't expect

I like to think of my adoption into the Landmark Community Newspapers family as an act of divine intervention.Poor economic conditions, nightmarish hours and bad management left me questioning my latest employment decision at age 24. Frustrated and eager to advance my career, I found myself on that day staring at a blank screen as I gathered the nerve to write a resignation letter before having another job lined up to pay the bills.

  • Locust Grove will help relieve overcrowding

The construction of Locust Grove Elementary School is moving forward well ahead of schedule. Located on the East Oldham campus off of Ky. 22, the new school will have a capacity of 700 and open school with about 590 students. With the opening of Locust Grove Elementary School in August, the district’s elementary school crowding will decrease significantly — dropping from our current number of 123 percent to 101.1 percent capacity. The Kentucky Department of Education establishes enrollment capacity numbers for each school.

  • See life in 3-D

Odds are you don’t know that December is 3-D Month. And if you’re thinking that must have something to do with funny looking cardboard glasses at the movie theaters, well – not so. 3-D month was created by President Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s to increase community awareness of the problems associated with impaired driving and to promote the use of designated drivers. 3-D is short for Drugged, Drunk and Driving Prevention Month. Seven Counties Services’ Prevention Division invites you to join in our efforts to safely celebrate this month.

  • Letters to the editor

We all need family and friends

    To the editor:

In looking back over the first six months of the 2007-08 school year, the Oldham County Adult Education Program has come to the conclusion that all of us need family and friends for support, guidance and sometimes to help us along our educational journey.

  • A new governor, a new era

With the 2007 elections now behind us, it is time to turn our attention back to the business of the Commonwealth.

Last Tuesday, Steve Beshear was sworn in as governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. With the administration of that oath comes the inevitable change associated with a new administration in Frankfort. At this point, there is a great deal of uncertainty about what form that change will take. Some change will be dictated by financial constraints. Others will be dictated by the policy directions of the new governor.

  • Just like you and me

We don't get many police cars in our neighborhood, so I'm pretty sure my neighbors were a little curious about the silver Oldham County Police cruiser sitting in my driveway with blue lights flashing. Fear not, citizens. Officer Tom Douglas had arrived to give me a peek into Oldham County law enforcement.
