Today's Opinions

  • Letters to the Editor

    City can’t interfere

After reading the article in Nov. 7 EraI could not believe what was written about the power Pewee Valley claims over the cell tower installation by the Salem Assembly of God church at 209 LaGrange Road.

  • Go outside, Go Home, Go Away

Take care of yourself.  It’s something most of us don’t do very well.  Do you?  Admit it – it’s last on your list of things to do that never get done.  But now you’ve noticed how depleted you feel mentally and physically.

  • Sport neglected

Well just as I expected. Oldham County had two middle school cross country teams that won at state and there was only a small mention and the teams were labeled wrong. Not a big surprise.

Oldham County had close to 400 runners compete at Masterson Station Park on Oct. 26 with over 400 runners in some races. Our athletes represented Kentucky and our county against some 3,000 runners from across the state and The Era can’t even distinguish between a boys team and a girls team.

  • Veterans at risk
  • Make your vote count

In response to comments made regarding the La Grange City tax, I would like to put my 1% in! I do not live in the La Grange City limits but unfortunately work within the city limits. However I do live in Oldham County.

When we vote for elected officials such as President, Senators, etc., we vote for who we think will do the best for us as citizens of the United States. I have that right and I am very thankful for that.

  • Regulations cripple business

La Grange city council recently passed new consumer fireworks regulations and fees.  The reason cited was that state law now allows more and larger devices to be used.  This reason is disingenuous at best and dishonest at worst.

  • Smells good enough to eat

While my best friend was designing her “signature scent” in a fancy parfumerie in Covent Garden, I was next door at the cookie shop, deciding between Double Chocolate Chunk and Raspberry Macadamia.  Actually, I knew I would choose Double Chocolate Chunk, but I took my time because designing a signature scent takes forever.

Finally, she emerged smelling nearly as delicious as the cookie I was wolfing down.  Holding up a small vial, she explained, “They store the formula, so, I can purchase more in the future!”

  • Freedom of speech can be offensive

There is a reason that freedom of speech is the first amendment to the United States Constitution.  It is because we are really the only country that has such unfettered freedom.

As is so frequently and eloquently pointed out by my friend Saddique Malik in various articles in the  Courier Journal concerning Muslim fundamentalism – “free debate is a death-knell for fundamentalism.” … “it’s the freedom, stupid”
