  • Living ethically

     I know that conscience is something hard to explain and, whatever it is, it must be learned and developed.  Some people have done very evil things, yet they were following what they thought was their conscience.  But after psychologists have said all they can in explaining the human conscience (and some of them even explain it completely away) still we recognize a voice within saying, “This is right; that is wrong.”

  • Voegele announces special election for alcohol sales

    Last year, the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development announced plans to initiate a petition drive to hold a special election to determine whether retail alcohol sales should be permitted in all of Oldham County. The Chamber’s petition drive began April 10 of this year.

     Questioning special election

    I’m not sure why we have special elections.  

    It would be much easier to get the real will of the people, for any particular issue, by putting it on or with the November ballot.  I can’t see it helping anyone but the people who want to push the issue to make money from it.  This time it is a wet county.

     Years ago I had the opportunity to hear Mother Teresa speak at Bellarmine College in Louisville.  Someone in the audience asked Mother Teresa how she could keep such a busy schedule.  He said, “You crisscross the country and the world.  How do you do it? Aren’t you exhausted?  Your schedule would drive me crazy!”

       Last week I had the privilege of tagging along on a friend’s business trip to the Dominican Republic.  I had never been to the Dominican before, and was excited to experience the culture as well as gain a new stamp on my passport.  My traveling has been limited these days, and it felt good to once again venture outside of the U.S.

     Over the years of my ministry some of the most meaningful moments have been when I have been by the bedside of the dying. Their thoughts about life always seem more profound from this perspective.
