Today's Opinions

  • BE ALERT AND ATTENTIVE

The ring of my cell phone is a cue for me to be alert.  When I watch a musician, I am reminded of the importance of focused attention.  Greeting a family member, friend or colleague, I vow to be attentive to his or her needs today.

Attention or alertness is also known as mindfulness, concentration, and recollection.  We must stay alert or we risk missing critical elements in life – moments of grace, opportunities for gratitude, evidence of our connections to others, times of inspiration.

  • NEW PLACE, NEW FACE, PLENTY OF STORIES

For the past week, I’ve been driving around Oldham County as just another face in a place people apparently call the OC? I’m still trying to find the beach.

We could start from the beginning, but that was 25 years ago and I don’t remember much of it. So we’ll start with this: I’m a lifelong Kentuckian who has made his way to “The OC” to write about the faces, places and people that make up these communities.

  • Comprehensive Plan “ADU ‘s” = Rental Houses or Apartments

Did you know Oldham County’s Single-Family Zone is a “designated infill” area for affordable rental apartments or secondary dwellings?  ADU’s are built on one lot with a primary residence.  Magistrates declined to adopt the proposed Comprehensive Plan for that reason.   They think “single” should mean one.

  • Admiration for Ironman athletes

Ironman 2013 has lasped into history!

While it is true that some people were inconvenienced, and while it may be true that some people believed the police were rude to them, and while some people may have believed that bikers had no right to be on their road when they wanted to be there, it was an absolute awesome display of courage, committment, dedication, and athletic prowess.

In today's world of mediocrity, I wonder how many readers of this newspaper would, or even could, attempt to try what these 3000+ athletes did!.

  • A Farmer

The following was first published in The Oldham Era sometime in the late 1940’s.

    A Farmer

A farmer is a man who starts out with nothing, loses on everything he grows and comes out even at the end of the year. Nobody knows how he does it. He doesn’t even know himself!

  • RELIVING BEST DAY EVER

I celebrated twenty-two years of marriage last weekend.  I say “I” instead of “we” because hubby was seven thousand miles away, celebrating independently.

I had been anxiously looking forward to this particular anniversary because it fell on a Saturday, the same as our wedding.  My plan was to relive the day moment-by-moment, and I was ridiculously excited about it. But what can I say?  I’m a girl.

  • Held hostage by Ironman

I just wanted to share with everyone what a delight it is to be held prisoner on my street for the entire day in order for these cyclists to completely take over the road system.

Heck, my farm hand was even told by OCPD that we can’t move our hay equipment until this grand party is over.

I just can’t get enough of this.

  • Can La Grange ignore the law to suit its own agenda?

Last night [Aug. 5] the La Grange City Council, seeking to generate more tax revenue for its nearly bankrupt budget, voted to annex a section of land in Oldham County which has been at the center of controversy for months.

This land will be used to develop Dogwood Estates whose development plan can only be described as obscene.  While there are a lot of moral reasons that this annexation should not have passed, there are also the legal issues.
