  • A gray and misty spring break

Last week, my daughter and I, along with one of her friends, went to Ireland for spring break. Every Dubliner who learned we chose Ireland over sunshine and beaches thought we were crazy.
“Why of all the places in the world, did ya’ choose Ireland?”
“Ireland is gray and rainy, love. You should have gone to Florida.”
“Did ya’ lose a bet, did ye?”

  • And yet, it moves

Regardless of whether the members of this community call themselves pro-choice or pro-life, all women—who face greater risk than ever to their lives during pregnancy—deserve to have immediate access to medically accurate information about their reproductive health.

  • Get down and Derby with some country cookin'

    By Bob Fortunato
     Uncle Bob's Cookin'

Hurray! Derby season is here. Spring weather and a month of festivities all lead up to the greatest two minutes in sports. I have worked at the Kentucky Derby selling mint juleps, sat in the grandstand, partied in the infield, and attended many great Derby parties.

  • Letters to the Editor

    Chance’s Second Chance

Chance, the blind husky featured in the Era’s March 19 issue, went to his forever home on Friday. He was adopted by Ken Roberson of Shively.

  • Find the pot o'gold around you

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya!  I’m writing to you today from Ireland, the land of saints and scholars.  Can’t say I’ve seen either of those yet, but within the first 24 hours I did see many other stereotypical sights.
I’m on an Irish scavenger hunt, and I have already marked several things off the list:

    Pot of Gold
    Castle-check
    Rainbow over castle-check
    Guinness Beer-check
    Pot of Gold
    Green grass-check
    Moss covered stones-check
    Irish Whiskey-check

  • Get in the right zone for best planting options

    By Patrice M. Smith

We have encountered quite a long winter, ample amounts of snow and rain.  You have been reading my column and using your time wisely to scour the catalogues, watching gardening TV and hopefully you have made notes and devised a gardening plan.

That’s great and I’m very proud of you.

  • Jesus said: We need not fear death

Most people are scared to death of death.  That may be a silly statement, but it is true.  Look at all the lists of what scares people the most.  Death is number one.  We feel death’s presence when we enter or leave a hospital, so most people try not to.  We reflect on mortality every time we go into a funeral home, so people rarely do.  We see death on the nightly news every night, and we try not to relate, not to take it personal, but it is.  It is very personal.

  • How to kick butt and use the gym as an antidepressant

One month ago today, I finally did something I’ve always wanted to do.  I hired a personal trainer.  I have worked out sporadically over the years, but have a really hard time staying motivated. Out of the 16 years I have carried a membership, I have probably only spent a total of 36 hours at the gym.  This includes dropping kids off in the childcare center, socializing with other moms and spending extra time in the locker room so I could have a few minutes of peace before picking the kids up again.
