  • Some things you just can’t plan

I’ve always been a planner. I have a precise schedule in my head, a physical copy in a spiral-bound book and several alarms set in my phone. I guess you could call it a control problem, but I would call it preparedness.

I plan down to the minute of my day.

This is when I have to be at work. This is when I eat. This is when I go to the gym. This is when I go to sleep.

I even plan in my personal life. A phone call goes out to my mom at 5 p.m., my best friend at 6 p.m., dinner with friends at 7 p.m., favorite show at 8 p.m.

  • Three compliments to every sting rule

Last week I challenged you to smile at people. This was fairly easy for me to do since it is something I like to do, but I decided to notice the response of people when I caught their eyes and smiled at them.  Almost 100 percent smiled back.

  • Be open and transparent

When I was growing up we’d build a big snow fort after a sticky snowfall. Then we’d mass-produce snowballs and prepare for battle. The team that built the best snow fort usually won.

  • Creating smile wrinkles

I was in a store I often go to when one of the clerks, someone I’ve never met, approached me and said, “I love it when you come into the store. You are always smiling.”

  • Be of good cheer

When things go wrong, that’s the time to be of good cheer. When things go right, of course we are cheerful. When nerves are getting frayed, that’s the time to smile.
