  • Have you found your place in the sun or Son?

Have you ever heard someone talk about finding their place in the sun? It means that a person finds a job or a situation that makes them happy and provides lots of money and fame so they feel important.
It comes from the German foreign policy of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who would lead Germany and the world into World War I. Kaiser Wilhelm wanted to transform Germany into a global power through aggressive actions and a large navy to project German power.

  • Urban camping trip

I might have mentioned before, at least once or twice, that I’m not much of a camper.
My camping experiences have been limited to sleeping in a tent one night on the corner of a friend’s deck, two nights at my daughter’s scouting event and 10 extremely stressful nights in Haiti umpteen years ago.
But none of those excursions were really like true camping. Other people did all of the planning and cooking. I just showed up and did what I was told.

  • My cousin's weddin'

This coming weekend, my cousin is getting married.  I don’t get to see that branch of the family very often, so I am considering driving to St. Louis for the ceremony.  I mentioned the possibility to my 8-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son.

Phoebe was, of course, very excited and immediately began discussing what she should wear.  This is a child after my own shallow heart.  She knows wearing just the right outfit can make or break any event.

  • Couples praying for and with one another

I was running hard and mad. My wife had made me really angry, and I just put on my running gear and headed down the road. I was praying the whole time, and my prayers were for God to fix my wife.
I told God all about all the crazy things she had said or done. Today I can’t remember even what the fight was about. All I remember was when I got quiet, and decided to listen for God’s gentle whisper to speak to me.

  • Time is a great teacher, but kills all its pupils
  • Use summer veggies at their peak

My mother was German-Irish and she loved to cook cabbage. You will find cabbage dishes in every part of the country and in every culture. Like many vegetables, there are 100 ways to prepare and eat it. All cabbage types, if fresh, are a high and inexpensive source for Vitamin C.
Eighteenth century uses of cabbage combined food with medicine. The Dutch thought it was good medicine for a cold in the chest. The Dutch way was to simmer cabbage in butter and oil, water and vinegar seasoned with onion, pepper and salt to make a hot slaw.

  • Psychic sales clerk

“How are you today?” the sales clerk asked.
I offered the standard, “I’m fine, how are you?”
“I’m hanging in there,” she replied.
“Okay, to be honest, I’m barely hanging in there myself. This has been a really crappy week,” I divulged.
She came around the counter, and took both of my hands in hers. “Do you mind if I do this?”
Given my strong Christian upbringing and background, I thought she was going to pray with me. “I don’t mind,” I replied. “I welcome it.”
