  • Historic district commission terms have expired; Chairman ends his service

    Members of the La Grange Historic District Commission received certified letters in the past few days indicating some of their terms have expired years ago.

    Commissioner Linda Corbin said the letter she received from the city explains terms have expired and commissioners must apply to be reappointed. She's served on the historic district commission about 18 years, however, city documents only show her service in recent years.

  • Armed robbers ask for directions to OCMS, flee in a 1970s gold car

    Police are investigating an armed robbery earlier today at a cell tower in the 2400 block of Liberty Lane in Goshen.

    According to police, two men approached a T-Mobile technician working at the tower about 11:40 a.m. and asked for  directions to Oldham County Middle School.

    Seconds later, one man brandished a small handgun and demanded money and tools.

    Witnesses said they fled the scene in a 1970s gold- or copper-colored Plymouth Fury with missing hubcaps and drove north headed toward U.S. 42.

  • LPD officer dives into I-71 median to avoid crash; driver charged, alcohol may be a factor

    A La Grange police officer and another man are hospitalized following a crash on I-71.

    According to police, a pickup truck pulling a small trailer jackknifed and flipped on its side about 1:20 a.m. Sunday on I-71 southbound between milemarkers 20 and 21.

    Two officers from the Oldham County Police Department and La Grange Police Officer Jeremy Ferguson responded to the scene and prepared to shutdown a section of the interstate.

    OCPD Lt. Col. Billy Way said Ferguson exited his vehicle and popped the trunk to retrieve emergency equipment and a reflective vest.

  • Woman found inside burning Orchard Grass home

    Police are investigating the cause of a Sunday morning house fire after firefighters rescued a woman from the house.

    Neighbors noticed smoke coming from a bi-level home in the 7300 block of Autumn Bent Way in Orchard Grass Hills subdivision about 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

    When firefighters arrived at the scene, witnesses told police they believed a 41-year-old woman and her daughter could still be inside.

    An $11,000 city-funded sign marking the James T. Beaumont Community Center in La Grange could be torn down because it doesn’t comply with the city’s guidelines for signs. 

  • Shelby b-ball standout moves in with North Oldham family; enrolled at NOHS via court order

    Darryl Hicks has made it official; he's headed to North Oldham High School for his freshman year.

    The Oldham Era confirmed Wednesday that Hicks is living with a family in the North Oldham High School district.

    NOHS basketball coach Danny Edelen said Hicks enrolled at NOHS Monday afternoon for his freshman year.

    Dan Orman, assistant superintendent of pupil personnel for Oldham County Schools, said board officials are following legal avenues regarding a court order establishing Hicks' residency in Oldham County.

    Buying school supplies for two or three children is expensive. Imagine the cost of buying supplies to outfit an elementary classroom. 

    Twelve hundred dollars — that’s how much the organization Adopt-A-Classroom estimates the average teacher in America spends outfitting his or her classroom. 

  • Ballardsville family loses home but not dogs

    A Ballardsville family lost their home in a fire Wednesday afternoon, but at least their two small dogs made it out alive.

    "Everything else can be replaced," resident Kathy Kinser said. 

    She had to wait more than an hour to see her dogs come out alive in the arms of Ballardsville Fire Department Lieutenant Ryan Baker.

  • Piedmonte named student ambassador at Murray State

    Alex Piedmonte was recently named a student ambassador for the fall semester at Murray State University. She is studying pre-medicine and chemistry and is a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She is the daughter of Darren and Joan Piedmonte of Goshen.
