    Contributions – It’s what my job as fundraiser for Hosparus (the non-profit community hospices of Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Central Kentucky) is all about. Contributions are the necessary element to sustain hospice care for the future, especially for our bereavement and children’s programs. My role makes me mindful of the importance of making a contribution.

  • El Caporal celebrates grand opening

    El Caporal recently celebrated its grand opening in Crestwood. 

    Located at 6825 Central Ave., El Caporal specializes in Mexican food. 

    Owned by Luis Angeles, the restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday, noon to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. For information call 632-2032.

  • Verizon adds to Oldham network

    Verizon Wireless has activated three new cell sites in Louisville and New Albany, Ind., which enable more customers to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls with clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.

    The new cell sites, each of which are equipped with a permanent backup generator for times of emergency, improve voice and data coverage in Buckner, downtown New Albany and in New Albany’s Falling Run Park as well as along the following roads:

    · Ky. 393 between Interstate 71 and U.S. 42;

    · Ky. 146 between Buckner and La Grange;

  • Students from Oldham named Sen. Jeff Green Scholars

    By earning a 4.0 grade-point average all four years of high school and scoring a 28 or higher composite on the ACT, 52 students from Oldham County have been named Sen. Jeff Green Scholars.The title honors the late state Sen. Jeff Green of Mayfield, who served in the Kentucky General Assembly from 1992 to 1997.

    South Oldham High School students who earned the honor include South Oldham High School: Derek Burkhart, Anna Dezarn, Maureen Dreckman, Matthew Dudgeon, Jessica Jenkins, Cody Malone, Kacie Niemann, Natalie Pope, Michael Rundell, Alexa Weigel and Alex Williams. 

  • NOMS boys win Dragon Invitational

    The North Oldham Middle School boys’ cross country team won the South Oldham Dragon Invitational Saturday. North had five runners in the top 11. North is undefeated this season with a record of 9-0. Top scorers for North were Trenton Fryman, Nolan Ruhs, David Terkula, Michael Cawood and Matthew Powers.

  • Walkin' for Will

    North Oldham High School hosted a Walk-a-thon for NOHS teacher Will Jones Friday before the school’s last home football game of the season. Jones is battling cancer and said he and his family have received an overwhelming amount of support from the NOHS students, staff and community. 

    The Walk-a-thon is one of several fundraisers benefiting Jones. T-shirts that read “You, Me and Jones, Together we Fight” and “Walkin’ 4 Will” have been sold.

     

  • Engagement Announcement

    Gene and Carol Raulston of La Grange announce the engagement of their grandson, Cameron Raulston to Cara Montgomery, daughter of Gary and Pam Montgomery of Bardstown. 

    The bride-elect is a 2008 graduate of Campbellsville University and is employed as a first-grade teacher at Kentucky Christian School. 

    The groom-elect is a 2006 graduate of Oldham County High School and a senior at Campbellsville University. He is the son of Pat Giles.

    A wedding will take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at Bardstwn Baptist Church with Todd Parish officiating.

  • Health department plans two H1N1 vaccination clinics in Oldham

     The Oldham County Health Department will offer the H1N1 vaccine by appointment only Oct. 29.

    The CDC recommends that all persons in the following categories receive vaccine first (not necessarily in this order): 

    • Pregnant women.

    • Children aged 6 months – 4 years. 

    • Children and adolescents aged 5 – 18 years who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications.

    Accomplishments: Greenwood is one of the outstanding campers at coach Steve Simpson’s fall break basketball camp this week at South Oldham High School.

    He is expected to be a key player for the South Oldham Middle School Dragons this year as a guard.

    “He’s a really nice player and a very hard worker,” Simpson said.
