  • Rumors of plan to bring gun to OCHS are unfounded

    Rumors that someone threatened to bring a gun to Oldham County High School last week are unfounded, OCHS principal Dave Weedman said.

    He said he believes a frenzy of rumors that swirled around the school Friday started with a threatening text message a female student received from a student in another district Dec. 13.

    Police were notified and contacted the message sender, Weedman said, but at no point did anyone threaten to come to OCHS with a gun. Officers from the Oldham County Police Department deferred comment to Weedman.

  • Memorial service planned for Westport fire chief, paramedic

    Geoffrey Alan Stock, 40

    La Grange

    Geoffrey Alan Stock, 40, of La Grange, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007.

    He was a paramedic for Oldham County EMS and Henry County EMS, chief of Westport Volunteer Fire Department and an instructor for Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

    Survivors include his wife, Terry Bartlett Stock; a son, George; a daughter, Julia; his mother, Sue Stock; a brother, Chris Stock; and two nephews, Cameron and Samuel Stock.

    A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Friday (Dec. 14) at Kavanaugh Center.

  • SOHS Marching Dragons to perform in Frankfort Tuesday for governor's inauguration parade

    This blows Oldham County Day out of the water.

    The South Oldham High School marching band has been selected to perform in Steve Beshear's inaugural parade Tuesday before his swearing-in Kentucky's next governor.

    Superintendent Paul Upchurch said a conference of high school principals and Director of High Schools Shirley Lauterbach selected which band would represent the county.

  • Residents ask officials to increase safety

    Oldham County High School senior Megan Lucas was a passenger in a vehicle that struck a deer and collided with a semi-truck Nov. 23 on Interstate 71 near Buckner. Her death has prompted local residents to lobby for safety improvements along I-71 in Oldham County, where dozens of deer graze between the northbound and southbound lanes. There have been 32 deer-related collisions reported in Oldham County in 2007, but last month alone, transportation workers picked up 60 deer carcasses along Oldham County roadways.

  • Ballardsville man appointed as KSP commissioner

    Rodney Brewer teaches criminal justice students at the University of Louisville that a police officer's primary responsibility is serving the public. Sometimes, officers lose sight of that mission.

    But public servants are heroes everyday, he said. And Brewer, 50, said there's nothing more rewarding than working with these heroes.

    Brewer returns to the police force Tuesday when he's sworn-in as commissioner of the Kentucky State Police. Governor-elect Steve Beshear appointed him to the post.

    Crestwood student's jewelry exhibited at Murray State

    The work of Murray State University student Kelli Burch was displayed Friday in the Upper Clara M. Eagle Gallery.

    In the group show, Burch exhibited jewelry she made from sterling silver, copper, pearls and found objects using various hand-building and casting techniques.

    Burch, from Crestwood, is the daughter of Roy and Donna Burch. She graduates from MSU in December and plans to pursue a culinary degree.

  • Parks department hosts walk for Teddy Bear Tree program

    The Oldham County Parks and Recreation Department will host a holiday two-mile walk benefiting the Teddy Bear Tree program Saturday at Wendell Moore Park. The walk will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the John W. Black Community Center. The cost is $10 per person plus a toy or $15 without a toy. Each participant will receive a T-shirt.

    Former officer pleads guilty to drug possession

    A former Oldham County Police officer who worked with the department's drug-sniffing dog will complete community service and pay a fine for cultivating marijuana in July.

    Gerald 'Jerry' Colston pleaded guilty to possession of less than eight ounces of marijuana on Nov. 21.

    Colston, 38, was originally charged with cultivating less than five plants of marijuana. That charge was amended.

    He was sentenced to pay a $250 fine and complete 150 hours of community service.
