  • New restaurant is ‘dream’ come true

     

    A dream 10 years in the making has finally taken form in Crestwood.

    Longtime friends Gabriel Frankel and Raul Blanco opened the windows to Gara Empanada on March 7. The drive-through or walk-up restaurant in the Pioneer Village parking lot off Veterans Memorial Parkway serves seven flavors of empanadas accompanied by homemade sauces.

    “Every country has a form of empanada with a different name or style,” Blanco said. “We are trying to offer the best empanada for the community.”

    Oldham County is home to two of the 104 certified farm markets across the Commonwealth recently accepted into the 2014 Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Farm Market Program. The Oldham County members are: Boone Gardiner Garden Center and Sherwood Acres Beef.

    In joining the Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Farm Market Program, these markets have committed to offering quality products and service to their customers. Their acceptance by Farm Bureau tells customers that they meet the highest standards of quality, freshness and marketing appeal.

  • ‘Blue Tea’ scheduled for April 13

    Each year Discover Downtown La Grange local merchants join together with Ovarian Awareness of Kentucky (O.A.K) and Baptist Health La Grange to host the Blue Hydrangea Progressive Tea. This is an annual fundraiser for cancer education and support. All ticket proceeds benefit O.A.K. The tea will be held in downtown La Grange Sunday afternoon, April 13, from 1-5 p.m.. Visitors purchase tickets in advance for $10 each, or $15 the day of the event.

    Tess Gerdemann just returned to North Oldham High School after spending the fall semester as U.S. Senate Page appointed by Sen. McConnell. On her first day of service on the Senate floor she witnessed the Senate debate on Syria; she worked all night during Sen. Cruz’s filibuster; and she witnessed the daily back and forth among the Senators as they wrestled with the budget issues and government shutdown. Gerdemann is pictured with U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell.

    Several years ago I vacationed in southern Florida. Thousands of people were there relaxing and seeking a good time. One night, while walking down one of the brightly lit streets in Naples, I passed a Western Union office. It was deserted except for the clerk and a woman. She had a telegram in her hand and was crying her heart out. It reminded me that even in the land of good times and seas breezes, hearts can still be broken.
