  • Mother dissatisfied with Buckner diploma for son

    A Crestwood student recently graduated from the Bluegrass ChalleNGe Academy, a National Guard program in Fort Knox.
    Dakota Williams, 18, completed the 22-week program that includes academics, leadership and job skills in a quasi-military setting.
    Started in 1999 as part of a national program, BCA holds two classes per year with about 100 students in each class.
    Williams plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University this semester.

  • South Oldham grad chosen as a Ky. Derby Festival Princess

    Five women chosen for the 2013 Kentucky Derby Festival’s Royal Court include a South Oldham High School graduate, festival officials announced today.

    The women selected will act as ambassadors for the 2013 Kentucky Derby Festival, attending nearly 70 events during a two-week period.

    Cameryn "Cammie" Jones of Goshen is a senior at the University of Kentucky studying food science. She is a 2009 graduate of South Oldham High School.

  • Crestwood man who fled to Miami with teen now faces additional charges

    A Crestwood man accused of rape and sodomy after he fled to Miami with a 15-year-old girl in 2011 has been indicted for additional criminal charges. 

    Toby Mason, now 54, skipped town in May 2011 with a teenager he met while playing video games. The teenager had packed clothes and toiletries during the night and left a note on her pillow explaining she wanted an adventure. 

    Ten days later, U.S. Marshals located the teenager in a Miami motel room with Mason and another man. Mason did not have a car, and the teenager did not have a driver’s license.

  • School district celebrates careers of support staff

    Oldham County Schools said goodbye to two very familiar faces last week.

    Nancy Stivers and Diane Miller were both honored during a retirement reception at the Oldham County Schools Arts Center Jan. 4.

    Both women worked for the school district for more than 20 years apiece — Stivers as the superintendent’s administrative assistant and Miller as the front desk receptionist.

  • Baxter, Rash are sworn-in as Commonwealth’s Attorney, Oldham Circuit Clerk

    Newly-elected officials Courtney Baxter and Rick Rash took their oaths of office Jan. 4 at the Oldham County Courthouse. 

    Rick Rash was sworn-in as Oldham County Circuit Clerk by Family Court Judge Tim Feeley. Rash, a former magistrate, will serve a six-year term and replaces Lynn Mason, who retired after 18 years as circuit clerk.

  • Neighbors provide clothes, gifts after fire destroys Briarhill home

    "Sometimes the most unexpected tragedy can lead to unexpected blessings,” members of the McManus family wrote in a recent thank-you letter to neighbors in Briarhill Estates.

    On Dec. 10, a fire in the master bathroom spread through the attic of the McManus home on Cambridge Drive, destroying the attic and damaging much of the residence.

  • Goshen residents report late-night gunfire, damage

    A Prospect man’s New Year celebrations started off with a bang — and led to his arrest.

    Demond Colbert, 33, fired his gun into the air multiple times from his backyard in the 1300 block of Pine Hill Court, off Locust Circle. 

    According to Oldham County Police, two rounds went into Colbert’s neighbor’s home. 

    No one was injured.

    Colbert was arrested and charged with two counts of wanton endangerment. His arraignment is scheduled Jan. 14.

  • Milton-Madison Bridge reduced to one lane Jan. 10

    The Milton-Madison Bridge, which carries US 421 across the Ohio River from Milton, KY to Madison, IN, will be reduced to one lane on Thursday, January 10 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. 

    Engineers from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will be monitoring items on the bridge that were highlighted in previous inspections. 

    The Cabinet implemented a monthly inspection frequency in 2012 to review these locations.  The goal is to keep the Milton-Madison Bridge operational during the super-structure replacement project.

  • Student collecting bicycles for charity Jan. 5

    Have old bicycles gathering dust in the garage? A North Oldham Middle School student is collecting them for his Eagle Scout project.

    Ben O'Brien is conducting a charitable collection for his Eagle Scout project to benefit an organization named "Bikes for the World."  This company receives bikes from various donors across the country, and gives them to people in Africa who need them.
