  • La Grange man arrested on porn charges

    A La Grange man has been arrested on charges alleging he distributed and possessed child pornography.

    Richard Wayne Johnson, 35, was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 17, after Kentucky State Police served a search warrant at his home.

    Johnson is charged with two counts of distribution of matter portraying a sex performance by a minor and 12 counts of possession of matter portraying a sex performance by a minor.

    He was lodged in the Oldham Co. Jail and has been released on bond.

  • Henderson's death impacts bourbon community

    Lincoln Henderson, a man well known in the bourbon industry, passed away on Sept. 10 after a battle with melanoma.

    Henderson worked for forty years at Brown Forman distilleries under Steve Thompson as their chemist and blend selector. Thompson, now a part owner of the Kentucky Artisan Distillery in Crestwood, said Henderson was in charge of sampling all various bourbons so they continued to manufacture a consistent product.

  • Occupational tax on 'honor system'

    The much discussed La Grange compensation tax will go into effect on Oct. 1 with the hope of pulling the city out of debt.

    While the plan starts in October, the amount the city will bring in won’t be known until February. That’s because the tax will be collected quarterly, city attorney Steve Emery said. The tax is also solely dependent on the businesses keeping track of their employees’ wages.

  • Elite Feats

    On a cool, crispy morning last week, two FBI snipers laid on top of the press box at Oldham County High School’s football field.

    Their target was an angry man inside a white truck, parked at the edge of the grounds at the field, who had “kidnapped” a member of Oldham County Schools Junior Guard.

    After about five minutes of tracking the man inside his vehicle, the snipers executed the suspect after he put a gun to the student’s head.  A FBI SWAT team then moved in to clear the truck and “rescued” the student.

  • School redistricting down to one proposal

    After a long process triggered by the eventual closing of Liberty Elementary, school officials have narrowed the latest round of redistricting proposals to one each for elementary, middle and high school boundaries.

    Oldham County School District officials presented the narrowed down plans to the school board at their monthly meeting on Monday, taking the map drawing out of the district’s hands and into board member’s. The final proposals largely affect the northeast corridor of Oldham County, from Westport to the Henry County line.

     Over the past four years, Ellie McDearman has been working on a golden idea.

    It involves pumpkins and face painting, games and prizes, crafts and raffles -- everything a 16-year-old girl might want at a party.

    But this isn’t about Ellie’s next birthday bash or about just having a fun time. This is about Ellie’s mother, Julie. This golden idea is about her.

    Troop/Pack 167 will host a Spaghetti Dinner on September 21 at 5 p.m. at the Crestwood United Methodist Church.   • Motorists advised of possible delays on area roadways

     There will be construction work on Interstate 71 in Oldham County as contract crews will begin work this week to install median cable barriers between mile points 15 and 17.8.

    Lane closures are possible on southbound I-71 in Oldham County between mile points 15 and 17.8 on weeknights from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning and on weekends from 7 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday. 

    Shoulder closures are possible 24 hours/day.

    Motorists should be cautious in the following areas as well:

  • Parenting seminar offered

     The Kosair Charities Children’s Peace Center at Our Lady of Peace, part of KentuckyOne Health, will host a free seminar for parents in Oldham County on managing difficult childhood behaviors as part of the Peace for Parents series.

    The seminar will be presented by Kim Dwyer-Moore, a board certified behavior analyst with Our Lady of Peace and will provide information on managing difficult childhood behaviors at home and school. 

    The next seminar will take place on October 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Crestwood Elementary, 6500 Kentucky 146.
