  • Thankful for life

    As a child, Marion Blumenthal Lazan played games in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany.

    Lazan shared her experiences Nov. 19 with Oldham County Middle School students who have been discussing Lazan’s memoir, Four Perfect Pebbles: A Holocaust Story.

    Born in 1934, Lazan grew up in Nazi-ruled Germany where laws were already being enforced against the Jews.

    “Jews were not allowed into theaters, swimming pools, parks or public schools,” said Lazan. “There were curfews and shopping restrictions for Jews.”

  • Holiday celebration planned at nature preserve

    Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve will host the Nature of Christmas in Goshen noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 5. 

    The event includes a free lunch of chili and hot dogs (first come, first serve) and steaming cups of hot chocolate. 

    Family friendly activities include wagon rides, bon fire and marshmallow roasting, free kids crafts, holiday booths and nature preserve wreaths for sale and a performance by St. John’s Bell Choir.

  • Sheriff’s office, Southern Police Institute host Lebanon National Police

    On Saturday, the Oldham County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Steve Sparrow and the Southern Police Institute hosted 35 officers of the Lebanon National Police at Skylight Training Center.

    The police officers are taking classes through the month of November at SPI in Louisville on American policing techniques. 

    Judge-Executive Duane Murner spoke at the event, which allowed the foreign officers to see Kentucky thoroughbreds up close and to speak with local law enforcement.

    Letters to Santa are due Dec. 9 for publication in an upcoming edition of The Oldham Era. 

  • Friends of Oldham County Parks meeting is Tuesday

     There will be an informational meeting for people interested in forming a “Friends of Oldham County Parks” group at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the John W. Black Community Center in Buckner. 

    The meeting is for anyone interested in being part of a grassroots effort to improve and develop parks and recreational opportunities in Oldham County. 

    There will be a brief overview of the Oldham County Parks and Recreation Department and a discussion of how to best achieve the goals set forth in the recently completed comprehensive master plan. 

  • Jurich is rotary club’s guest speaker

    Tom Jurich, Vice President for Athletics at the University of Louisville for the past 12 years, will be the guest speaker at the South Oldham Rotary Club’s meeting Dec. 4.  

    The club meets Fridays at 7:30 a.m. at the Oldham County Schools Arts Center. Visitors are welcome.
