  • Prospect woman spins to win

    A trip to visit her daughter took an exciting spin for a Prospect woman who became the day's big winner on the Price is Right in October.

    In total, she won nearly $55,000 in prizes.

    During a trip to Los Angeles, Lynda Huckaby and her daughter, Steffany, waited in line for four hours to be interviewed for the iconic television game show.

    Steffany, a former Oldham County Schools teacher, said she almost threw in the towel because of the wait.

    But when her mom got called to come on down, those regrets vanished.

  • LG&E/KU warns of phone scam

    Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company want to alert customers of a new telephone scam whereby a caller claims to be a utility employee and asks for bill payment over the phone or in person, and threatens to disconnect electric or natural gas service if the targeted customer does not cooperate. 

    The companies have alerted authorities and offer the following advice to residential and business customers in the wake of this new scam:

  • Thanksgiving Day fire damages Crestwood home

    Neighbors noticed smoke billowing from a home in Kentucky Acres subdivision and alerted firefighters at lunchtime on Thanksgiving Day.

    Crews from South Oldham Fire & Rescue, Ballardsville Fire and Pewee Valley Fire spent much of the afternoon battling a fire in the 7500 block of Derby Drive.

    It was reported around 12:45 p.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but does not appear to be cooking related.

    The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

  • Masseuse calls 911 from deputy sheriff’s home

    Police were called to an off-duty Oldham County Sheriff’s Deputy’s home after an erotic masseuse called 911.

    According to a report by Oldham County Police, William Schulte, a deputy with the OCSO, hired the masseuse to come to his home on Dover Cove, in Buckner, on Nov. 4.

    Sheriff Steve Sparrow said Schulte resigned following the incident to resolve personal issues.

    Schulte does not face any criminal charges and denied any wrongdoing to police.

  • Making room to grow: Yew Dell Botanical Gardens marks 10 years with a new greenhouse

    Aluminum is the traditional anniversary gift for a 10th anniversary. At Yew Dell Botanical Gardens, that gift is coming in the shape of a greenhouse.

    Several dozen people gathered on a chilly day at the gardens Nov. 14 to official break ground on the new greenhouse, one of several new horticulture facilities.

    Executive Director Paul Cappiello said the horticulture buildings are a perfect way to mark the beginning of the next 10 years at Yew Dell.

  • Defense: Accused double-murderer was 'standing his ground'

    An attorney for the Oldham County man accused of double murder says the defendant was simply “standing his ground” when he shot and killed a pregnant woman and her sister at his Covington Ridge Farm last winter. 

    Robert Riley, a La Grange attorney representing accused murderer, Ronald T. Evridge, 58, last Thursday asked Oldham Circuit Judge Karen Conrad for an evidentiary hearing that could ultimately grant Evridge immunity from facing civil or criminal proceedings.

  • Death row inmate's life spared due to jury error

    It has been 12 years since Armott and Edna Porter were murdered in their Crestwood home by their former son-in-law.

    Last week, Miguel Soto, 41, re-entered a guilty plea for those crimes that will spare his life, but keep him in prison without the possibility of parole.

    Soto was sentenced to death in 2000, but a circuit court judge reversed Soto’s death sentence last year because he was denied the right to a fair trial.

  • Accused child molester has past of sexually abusing children

    Prosecutors say a La Grange worker charged with sex crimes against children is a serial child molester who was previously sentenced to at least 10 years in Jefferson County for abusing his 5-year-old daughter and niece. 

    Commonwealth Attorney Courtney Baxter filed records in Oldham Circuit Court earlier this month that indicate Denver Hawkins, 56, of Louisville, has a history of child sex abuse, dating from as early as 1995 when he was convicted of sexually abusing and trying to sodomize two young relatives.

  • Oldham health department growing

    The Oldham County Health Department is finishing construction on a 6,000-square-foot expansion that will allow for more programs and services to be offered at the department.

    Many people don’t realize the department’s scope, said executive director Teresa Gamsky.

    The department oversees all food inspections, communicable disease services, maternal and child health services and emergency preparedness.
