  • Snow puts school in session during Oaks

    The long winter has finally caught up with Oldham County Schools.

    While other school districts have gone to school on holidays or canceled parts or all of spring break, students at OCS have largely avoided the same fate during the multiple winter storms that have blanketed the region.

    That is, until now.

    With last Monday becoming the 12th canceled day of the year, the school board decided to officially put school in session on what’s largely a holiday in the Louisville area, Oaks Day on May 2.

  • Agriculture scholarships available for fall semester

    The Louisville Agricultural Club will provide college scholarships to high school seniors and current college students who will be enrolled in an agricultural college or university in either Kentucky or Indiana in the fall of 2014. To be eligible, students must be residents of Clark, Floyd or Harrison County in Indiana or a resident of one of seven counties in Kentucky. Oldham County is one of the specified counties in Kentucky.

  • SOHS wins robotics competition

    CX, or Robo Challenge Xtreme, is a challenging robotics competition sponsored by the State Technology Leadership Program. Students from elementary through high school competed in three separate divisions to design, build and program a robot capable of completing this year’s missions in least amount of time. At the end of the day, the first and second place teams from each division were awarded and qualified to compete at this year’s STLP State Finals, which will be held on April 22 at Rupp Arena.

  • Fellowship awarded to OC graduate

    Jonathan Sherry has won an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for the academic year 2014-2015. He will spend the year living in Barcelona, Madrid and the Canary Islands doing archival research for his PhD dissertation on the history of the Spanish Civil War. Jonathan is a 2005 graduate of Oldham County High School and a 2009 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University.

    He earned a master’s at the University of Pittsburgh in 2011.

  • Student selected for Naval Academy summer seminar

    The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) invited a select group of approximately 2,550 young men and women from around the nation and abroad to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar program this year. Summer Seminar is a fast-paced leadership experience for rising seniors in high school. This program helps educate, motivate and prepare selected students who are considering applying for admission to USNA.

    Nicolas Ferrera, a student at South Oldham High School, will participate in the 2014 U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar program.

  • School board sets calendar, breaks for upcoming school year

    The calendar for the upcoming school year has been officially set after receiving approval from the Oldham County Board of Education.

    The board approved the calendar at its monthly meeting in February, setting the first day of school as Aug. 20. The final day of school is tentatively set for June 3, 2015.

    The school year’s Spring Break is April 6 – 10, 2015, but for the first time in many years doesn’t line up with Jefferson County Public School’s break.

  • OCS launches engineering academy for next year

    Giving students the tools they need today to solve the issues of tomorrow is a big goal of Oldham County Schools, according to the school district’s 21st Century Learning Outcomes.

    As part of this promise to students and teachers the district has created OCS Engineering Academy, the district announced last week.

    “It’s hands-on, minds-on teaching,” Chief Academic Officer Anita Davis said. “They are going to be building, designing and using auto cad. This isn’t a theory class, it’s a hands-on (one).”

  • Homeschooled student creates alternative prom

    As a homeschooled student, the chances of Victoria Downs going to prom this year were low.

    That is, until she created her own.

    Downs, an 18-year-old Crestwood resident, has created “Night of 100 Stars,” a prom-like event to be held April 26 at Crestwood Baptist Church.

    Downs, who has been home schooled her entire life and is a senior this year, said she didn’t want to miss out on a chance to have a classic high school moment.
