  • South Oldham firefighters were recently recognized during the organization’s annual awards dinner for service to the department and the community.

    For the first-time ever, a special lifesaving commendation was awarded to firefighters who pulled a woman from a burning building.

    Chief Edward Turner recognized Capt. Matt Nelson, Sgt. Jim Johnson, Sgt. Mike Arth and Firefighter Wes Krimple for heroic efforts to rescue a woman inside a burning building Aug. 16.

  • On Jan. 21, 18-year-old Lindsey Gilbert, of Crestwood was crowned Miss Teen Oldham County – World 2010.

    Gilbert is a senior at Christian Academy of Louisville. 

    She volunteered recently for Wayside Christian Mission, a homeless shelter. She also volunteers at a local nursing home. She hopes to someday become a nurse.

    At Christian Academy she is involved with the school yearbook, Beta Club, Spanish club, art club and Kentucky Youth Assembly. 

  • Marianne Stoess, a native of Pewee Valley joined the Kentucky Humanities Council Jan. 25 as assistant director for marketing and public relations and editor of Kentucky Humanities magazine.

    She comes to the council following a 10-year stint at IMG College, formerly Host Communications Inc.

    She spent the past five years with IMG College serving as the company’s NCAA coordinator, overseeing the annual production of nearly 150 National Collegiate Athletic Association championship publications. 

  • Dick and Bobbie Schiller celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Feb. 4. The couple resides in Crestwood.

    They married Feb. 4, 1950, in Pennsylvania.

    Dick is a retired Dupont employee. They have two children – Tom (Pam) Schiller and Richard (Jenny) Schiller; six grandchildren, Christopher, Mitch, Alayne, Caroline, Laura and Hannah; and two great-grandchildren, Max and Sam.

  • Paul and Linda Nichter of Crestwood announce the wedding of their daughter, Heather Michelle Nichter to David Keith Mullins of La Grange, son of Robert and Leighanna Davis.

    The bride is an Oldham County High School graduate. 

    The groom is also an OCHS graduate and is self-employed.

    The wedding took place Nov. 21 at the groom’s parents’ residence with Chris Gustafson officiating.

    Amber Nichter, sister of the bride, served as maid of honor. 

  • Matthew Cooke, a senior from Crestwood, was recently named Western Kentucky University’s 2010 Coming Home King.

    Cooke, who was sponsored by Phi Gamma Delta, was honored at halftime of the WKU vs. Arkansas State basketball game at Diddle Arena.

  •  U.S. Army Spec. Bin Wan recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

    During the nine weeks of training, he studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

    He is the nephew of Shihua Pan of Prospect.

  • Southern States employee Bruce Bentley recently attended a comprehensive three-day training program designed to qualify him as a certified grow master specialist at Southern States Cooperative Inc. in La Grange.

    The program is designed to augment the knowledge of employees involved in advising customers on crop production. 

  • Greg and Julie Schwab announce the birth of their daughter, Addison Marie Schwab, born Oct. 21 at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange. 

    She weighed seven pounds, five ounces and measured 20 and a half inches long.

    Grandparents are Denny and Joan Roth of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Roger and Pay Schwab of Jackson, Mo.

    Great-grandparents are Pete and June Jaco of Whitewater, Mo. and Emily Roth of Ste. Genevieve, Mo.
