  • Dogs are man’s best friend, and man is willing to pay for the privilege. Pet owners continue to spend big bucks on their companions — not just dogs, but cats and other small animals, too.

    Norma Rash is one of those. 

    She has three dogs and one cat — she calls the dogs “the boys” and admits they are spoiled rotten.

    “Nothing is too much for the boys,” she said.

  • She calls her baby boy for kisses. He runs over, hair flopping, big brown eyes like liquid jewels in a sweet face.

    This baby is the newest addition to Denise Coonley’s alpaca family, currently numbering a dozen. And they all get kisses, not just baby Seven.

    Coonley’s farm, Bluebonnets and Bluegrass Alpaca Farm, is located just off Ky. 22 in Ballardsville and is pretty much a one-woman operation.

  • The Oldham County Singers Community Choir will provide a special performance on Oldham County’s famous songwriters as part of the Smithsonian Institute’s “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music” exhibit that opens March 10-April 21 at the Oldham County History Center.

    The program includes famous composers of Oldham County’s past such as 20th century pop artist, Buddy Pepper who wrote “Vaya Con Dios” and 19th century composer, W. S. Haye’s “Evangline”. 

  • Bullets weren’t the only thing in the air at Open Range Saturday — love was, too.

    Stefan Harp and his girlfriend, Lysa Shepard, arrived at the Crestwood gun range for what Lysa thought would be a normal day of shooting.

    She recalls being impressed that Harp thought to make a lane reservation in advance.

  • The Oldham County History announces the Lowry Watkins, Jr. Summer Internship Program for college students.  This $1,200 award is open to college students with majors in art history, history, communications or education. 

    The award is only available to undergraduate students that currently attend the University of Louisville, Centre College or Transylvania University.

    Oldham County brides-to-be have a lot of local resources available, and Discover Downtown La Grange is bringing those resources to one place for the bridal fair.

    Clayton M. Christensen, Harvard Business School professor and an authority on business innovation and growth, will be in Louisville on Thursday, Jan. 26, to discuss his highly acclaimed article, “How will you measure your life?”

  • The award winning Oldham County Parks & Recreation WoodSongs Coffeehouse is the home of “roots music” in Oldham County.

    “Roots music” can best be described as an acoustic-oriented style that may include, but is not limited to: bluegrass, country, gospel/spiritual and singer/songwriter.

    The WoodSongs Coffeehouse is a family- friendly venue with a close-knit, homey feel where new players and seasoned performers will be given the opportunity to teach and learn from each other through shared experiences.

  • Six Guns Entertainment will film an independent Western movie in La Grange next weekend.

    The local reenactment group portrays historical scenarios, like the O.K. Corral shootout, and recreates scenes from famous Western movies.

    The filming will be at Main and First streets, and there will be simulated gunfire during the shooting.
    Filming is scheduled 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

    No parking is allowed on East Main Street while the movie is filmed.
