  • Earley: Jesus’ Resurrection is a sign of hope

When Nikita Khrushchev died, a humorous story circulated in political circles. The Communist party had cast Mr. Khrushchev aside and was uncomfortable about burying his body on Soviet soil. So they called President Richard Nixon, but President Nixon had his own problems at the time and declined. Then the Soviet leaders tried Golda Meir, Prime Minister of Israel. She was agreeable but added, “I must warn you that this country has the world’s highest resurrection rate.”

  • God’s love versus God’s justice

Have you ever wondered about the people who heard Jesus speak and didn’t believe? They saw him heal the blind and said it was from Satan. They saw him heal the lame and they said he did it on the Sabbath. He raised Lazarus from the dead and they said he must die. How can you stand in front of the Son of God, see him do unbelievable miracles and not believe? That is the power of sin. We all struggle with it all of our lives.

  • Free Agents or Unconditionally Elected

Who shall be saved? Who are the elect that will spend eternity with God? How much does God know about who will be saved and who will be lost to hell? How much free will do we actually have?

One option is Universalism, which means everyone will be saved. This has the broader application that all religious roads lead to heaven. One can find individual verses that seem to support this belief like John 3:17, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

  • Earley:The Total Depravity of the Soul

The children lined up in the cafeteria of a religious school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. A teacher made a note, “Take only one, God is watching.” At the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A boy wrote a note, “Take all you want, God is watching the apples.”

  • The battle of wills: Who do you think God is?

What we believe about God will tell us a lot about ourselves.

The prophet Isaiah shared this revelation from God about who God thinks He is. In Isaiah 45:5-6 we read, “I am the Lord and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know there is none besides me. I am the Lord and there is no other.”

  • Earley: Do you have beautiful feet?

Did you hear about the guy born with two left feet? He went out one day to buy some Flip Flips. I challenge you to go find a funny story about feet. I only found a few and they were not appropriate for a religion column. Perhaps foot humor is hard to find because all we have to do is look at our own feet and that is all the humor we can stand dealing with feet. I think my feet are hilarious with all the strange toe nails, odd skin formations and things toe nails collect. My kids just think they are gross. They say they don’t feel so good when they look at my feet.
