    Unused tea cups rattling around in your cabinet or attic can help benefit women with ovarian cancer.

    The tea cups are needed for the fifth annual Blue Hydrangea Tea sponsored by downtown La Grange merchants.

    The tea benefits Ovarian Awareness of Kentucky, a Louisville-based group which educates individuals and healthcare professionals about the subtle signs of the cancer.

  • Local non-profit arms residents with basic computer skills

    An Oldham County group is working to not only provide technology education, but provide a networking resource for technology-minded people.

    Oldham County Technology Advancement Network Enterprise — known as OCTANE — started about eight years ago as an offshoot of Oldham Chamber and Economic Development, said founder Beach Craigmyle.

    It was a special-interest group within the chamber, with Oldham County Online owner Lambert Franklin an early supporter.

    Wondering what to do this weekend? There's plenty of family-friendly fun right here in Oldham County.

    La Grange Railroad Festival & Burgoo Cookoff

    Festivities kickoff Friday with The Allen Lane Band performing 7-9 p.m. on the courthouse lawn. Lead singer Allen Lane is an integral part of this year’s railroad festival.

    On Saturday, festivities are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting with a Kids’ Choo Choo Sidewalk Parade will take place around the courthouse lawn.

  • Are you afraid of ghosts?

    La Grange may be dead at night — but not in the way you think. There’s plenty of activity, according to Spirits of La Grange Ghost Tour guides.

    Footsteps overhead, knocking on walls, even the occasional touch — attendees and guides report a range of unexplained activities during tours.

    It’s the 10th year for the tour, which includes about eight different stops, said Barbara Manley Edds, who helped launch them.

  • Been there, and fighting it: Veteran's Recognition event will focus on PTSD

    Many of America’s heroes are coming home and fighting a silent battle of their own — a battle many won’t acknowledge and can go undiagnosed and untreated for years.

    Post-tramautic stress — commonly known as PTSD — is being diagnosed in soldiers at increasingly higher rates. Many organizations are opting to drop “disorder” from the title to lessen the stigma associated with mental illness.

    It is likely not that more soldiers are experiencing PTS, but that the U.S. military has started paying more attention to it.

La Grange courthouse square will come to life with original, handcrafted painting/drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, glass, jewelry, mixed media, consumables, metal and wood, and fiber, juried in by artists, business associates and art enthusiasts.

  • Blue Hydrangea Tea benefits cancer education

    More than tea and crumpets will be served at the fifth-annual Blue Hydrangea Tea next weekend.

    A health and wellness room will offer free mini-massages and reiki treatments, along with health information and checks from event-sponsor Baptist Hospital Northeast. 

    The wellness message is in keeping with the event’s purpose of benefiting Ovarian Awareness of Kentucky, a Louisville-based group educates women and healthcare professionals about the subtle signs of ovarian cancer. OAK also has a monthly support group.

  • Around the world in 30 instruments

    Two concerts gave Oldham residents a chance to travel around the world last week — not in 80 days, but in 30 instruments.

    Traveling duo Four Shillings Short performed March 22 at Hewn From The Mountain Music Cafe in Crestwood.

    Aodh Og O Tuama, from Ireland, and Californian Christy Martin formed the group in 1997. 

    The husband-and-wife team sold their belongings in 1998, Tuama said, and started touring the country in a van, playing traditional, original and contemporary music.
